Kelburne Player Going to the Indoor World Cup!

Ben Rennie the goalkeeper of the Bromac Kelburne 1st XI has been selected for the Australian Indoor team for the Indoor World Cup to held in Leipzig, Germany from the 4th - 8th February. Australia will be up against all the top indoor nations in the world including hosts Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Iran and Sweden. Each game will be played in front of huge crowds and the atmosphere is sure to be electric.  

Ben joined Kelburne this season and has settled into the Scottish way of life. Involved in giving training to the junior players and goalkeepers. This will be an amazing experience for him we are sure he will be able to share this experience during the second half of the season. Everybody at Kelburne is wishing Ben the best of luck and we will be sure to follow each of Australia's game.

UK Lions Tour to India - Neil McIntyre

UK Lions - India Tour

Kelburne are proud to announce that Neil McIntyre has to selected to represent the UK Lions during their tour India next week. Read about his experience and make sure to keep a look out for updates on their results. 

Ever since Neil attended the Under 13 boys hockey tournament in Nottingham at the age of 10 it was an aspiration to be selected for the UK Lions, a team selected from the best players at the tournament. When he received the letter in 2012 to say he had been selected he was very happy and looked forward to playing. Although there was a lot of travelling involved the training and standard of hockey was excellent, playing junior club, district and national teams. The year culminated with a tournament in Belfast which was of a high standard and all the boys enjoyed. The next training session was to be the last of this group of boys but one of the parents, Satt Matharu, discussed with us the idea of keeping the boys together and going on an international tour. With Graham Bell and Pete Aitkens agreement plans were put in place to go to India to play in what would be an exceptional opportunity for some of the boys.            Left - At Cannock in 2012 meeting Ashley Jackson, Glenn Kirkham and James Fair

On the 12th December all the plans come to fruition when Neil will travel to India as part of a UK Lions team to take part in the All India Maharaja Ranjit Singh Jr. Gold Cup Boys Hockey Tournament. The tournament takes place at Amritsar Hockey Club. It will be the culmination of a brilliant time as part of the UK Lions Invitational team. For Neil and myself it is a once in a lifetime opportunity and a great chance for Neil to play international hockey. The UK Lions side has several English, Scottish and Welsh junior internationalists and they hope to put up a good show with teams competing from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Malaysia as well as host country India. It will give Neil the chance to see different styles of hockey as well as the facilities other countries have. The boys will not only play hockey but will be given the opportunity to visit schools and do some charitable work, with the team taking gifts of medical equipment

UK Lions v Wales at Repton 2013

All teams attend the tournament opening ceremony and the tournament itself will take place from the 15th to the 20th December. The UK Lions will also play a friendly against Amritsar Hockey Club Juniors on the 14th December in preparation. It should be an excellent trip and all the boys are really looking forward to it. They have all come a long way since the under 13 boys tournament in Nottingham in 2012

Pro-Life Fitness Kelburne 4th XI - Season so Far

The team got off to a great start to the season, winning their first four games, to sit top of division one. Away wins at Irvine and Glasgow Accies followed by two home wins vs Uddingston and Rottenrow gave the team a 12 point start to the season. Currently the top goal scorer of the team is Jack O'Connell. We are hoping that his scoring exploits will continue into the second half of the season. 
Mid season saw four back to back defeats. A very frustrating period with several players unavailable for regular selection.

The big "derby" game saw the team play Pro Life Fitness Kelburne 3 at Glasgow Green  Always a very competitive match with the younger development players in the 3,s taking on the more mature players in the 4,s Kelburne 4,s were defending for most of the game but two attacks and goals from young striker Finn Halliday gave us a 2-1 lead with ten minutes to go. Major upset on cards but with no subs available, fatigue eventually set in and Kelburne 3,s scrambled a goal in the last minutes to equalise to make it 2-2.
End of season push and the team were back in the points with two back to back wins v Helensburgh and Motherwell. A great response from the players following the previous defeats.
Pro Life Fitness Kelburne 4's also play in the Scottish Hockey Reserve Cup. They have won both games in this competition so far against Watsonians 8-1 and a magnificent 3-1 win against current league leaders Glasgow Western 3's see the team in the draw for the quarter finals in 2015.

Pro-Life Fitness Centre Kelburne 3rd XI - Season so far

Pro Life Fitness Kelburne 3rd XI continues to act as a development team playing in West District League 1.  The purpose of the development team is to blend a mixture of senior O?35 players with youngsters playing in the U16 and U14 junior teams who are either excelling or have gained District or International age group recognition.  The aim is not so much winning but preparing the juniors for the significant step up in standard to the Regional League that the 2nd XI play in, as well as educating the youngsters on game play and sharing experience from the number of ex internationals in the team on what is required to succeed.

 

The team approached the 2014/15 season optimistic that the squad could build on an indifferent 2013/14 season as the core group of players remained the same and the selected juniors were now a year older and showing signs of physical and game play maturity.

 

With the support of Pro Life Fitness Centre the 3rd XI began the season looking professional in our new training tops, a feature that helps set the standard and high light why Kelburne has a more detailed approach than other clubs within this league.  The season began well with only one loss in the first seven games that saw the team score 30 goals and only concede 7 with veteran and ex club captain Billy Anderson proving the perfect foil for youngster Luke Hortin as both topped the goal scoring charts.

 

As should be expected with a young inexperienced team a dip in form saw a run of two losses and one draw before the team finished the 1st half of the season with a 3-0 victory to reach the winter break consolidating a mid-table ranking.

 

Reflecting on the season so far Captain Stuart Robin assessed the progress ? This has been a challenging season so far with a number of strong, physical teams playing in WD1 and the mid table position is a fair reflection on our performance.  For me I must highlight the 6-1 away win to Hillhead that demonstrated the level off hockey that this team has the potential to achieve as it was the complete game for a development perspective as the youngsters really took onboard the information and coaching we have been providing them.  I set this game now as the bench mark for the level of performance we must attain week in week out.  Other key highlights were the return of Neil McIntrye who suffered a horrific double arm break in the summer.  Neil has worked hard on his rehabilitation and not only returned to the team but also to U16 Scotland training and now jets out to India in December to represent the UK Lions.  The team now can relax and we look forward to our annual mid season night out which this year is being hosted by team sponsors Pro Life Fitness Centre.  Come the New Year though training will resume with the aim of achieving a strong run of results similar to the first half?.

Kelburne Hockey club held a dinner at St Mirren Park Football stadium on the 22nd November to celebrate the recent success at the club. The 1st XI Men have won the National League Division 1 title for the last 10 years in a row and the 2nd XI Men have won the Regional Division 1 League 11 times out of the last 12 years.


The evening was started off with some words from the club president and ex manager of the 1st XI, Harry Coles.

?It is always a special occasion for any club to win their national championship, so for this club to achieve 10 consecutive national championship victories will surely go down as one of the truly great achievements in the history of Scottish Hockey.

On a personal note, it has been a great privilege and pleasure to a small part of this fabulous era of success, as both 1st team manager and president. I am sure that as a club we can go on to achieve even further success at all levels of the game in the years to come.?

The success is based on an excellent youth policy producing a large number of players who have went onto represent Scotland and Great Britain. These principles of producing our youth is something we are constantly looking to develop to keep Kelburne as one the top clubs in Paisley and Scotland.


The dinner ran smoothly with a number of fantastic speakers and stories being shared throughout the evening. The first of the main speakers John McKelvie was on top form, keeping everybody entertained. John also read out a congratulations card sent kindly by Scottish Hockey. 1st XI captain Jonathan Christie shared a number of stories from the last 10 years, many including good memories of past celebrations and mishaps. Club stalwart Stuart McAlphine reminisced about the Kelburne teams of the 90's. They had great success themselves and without that foundation this recent team would definitely not be in the position that they are in now. Sandy Strang was the second main speaker up and didn't disappoint. The evening was finished off by some kind words from Mark Fulton.


There was special recognition for 4 members of the 1st XI squad who have been ever present over the last 10 year. Mark Fulton, Chris Nelson, Michael Christie and Jonathan Christie have been the corner stones of the succeeding in winning the 10 in a row. A true inspiration to any younger player.


The club was very happy to welcome a number of our current and past sponsors. Without their support the club would not be in the position that it's in at this time. A number of our sponsors very generously donated prizes for the raffle and auction. Special thanks to Thomsons Cycles, Pro-Life Fitness Centre, Gilmour Sports and Glynhill Hotel. Bromac Ltd the new 1st XI sponsor continued their superb support during the evening, being very active during the auction. The miniatures for each place setting were kindly donated by new Kelburne sponsor Valt Vodka.


A number of one of a kind auction prizes were up for grabs during the night. Including a signed Team Scotland Mens Hockey strip from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (as seen on the left) and a Kelburne strip, signed by a number of the players involved over the last ten years. 

The night would not have happened without the hard work of a number of members. Mainly Douglas McEwan, Mark Fulton, Iain Scholefield and Cathrine McLauchlan. Assisted by Michael Bremner who designed the programme, Lesley Scholefield for doing the flowers and Barrie Scholefield who was the official photographer for the evening. 

Lastly Kelburne Hockey Club would like to thank everybody who attended and made it an unforgeable event in Kelburne's history.

Kelburne started the game strong keeping possession and creating chances, although unable to convert. However after 11 minutes Kelburne broke through after Neil McIntyre and Ewan Carmichael produced some good play before Andy Bremmner played the ball back post for a JG Shepherd tap in. 

Kelburne took this and stepped up another level with Uddingston playing very deep. This allowed Kelburne to have some space and eventually a second goal came. After some good play from Lenny in the midfield the ball found its way to Andrew Duff and once again the ball fell to JG at back post. Kelburne continued to put on the pressure and eventually won a short corner. The ball was slipped to Andrew Duff who swept the ball into the goal. Now 3 ahead and Kelburne started to take there foot off the gas. This presented Uddingston with a chance to pull a goal back after a lack of communication let a forward slip in behind and eventually put his shot just wide. Towards the end of the first half Kelburne started to improve again and won a series of short corners which they were unlucky not to score. At half time captain Ewan Carmichael spoke about how Kelburne started really well but shouldn't get complacent as there was still plenty of time left in the game.

As the second half began Uddingston were playing a lot more aggressive and putting pressure on the Kelburne defence. After 10 minutes though Uddingston managed to grab a goal after an unmarked man managed to sneak behind the Kelburne defence to be given an easy tap in. Kelburne started to up the tempo after this and were unlucky not to extend there lead after a series of great saves from the opposition goalkeeper. Uddingston nearly brought themselves within a goal when a flick was awarded. Unlike the cup game in the previous week, the penalty was missed and the score stayed at 3-1. Kelburne held out the rest of the game comfortably to claim the 3 points. That means Kelburne continue there great run of form and are now 11 from 11 in the league.

Billy Anderson leading the forward line took the pushback to start the last game of the first half of the season with the development team hoping to finish with a win. The team welcomed back Dick Donaldson from injury and he was soon involved in the action with a well weighted pass to Fraser Whiting out on the right wing. Fraser fired a quick pass into the D which was just outside Anderson's reach and the ball slid past the post. For the next few minutes the game was played out in the middle of the pitch with both teams trying hard to create an opening. It was Kelburne who scored on the tenth minute when Johnny Hughes played a great ball through to Billy Anderson who crashed the ball into the net.
For the next twenty minutes both teams created scoring chances but neither managed to find the back of the net. Kelburne won a few short corners and Anderson came close to adding to his tally for this match. As the time neared the break Uddingston scored to draw level. 

Halftime Kelburne Pro-Life Fitness 5's 1 - 1 Uddingston 4's 

Uddingston started the second half and quickly went on the attack but the Kelburne defence stood strong. Kelburne set up another attack which resulted in a short corner which was saved by the keeper. The team won three more short corners each were on target but were saved by the keeper. David Ogilvie in the Kelburne goal had to be sharp to save low to his right from an Uddingston short corner. This spurred the team to drive forward and Dick Donaldson put Wullie Allan in with a chance with a top D strike which shaved the post. The development team won two more short corners in quick succession and it was from the second that Anderson showed a masterclass on how to score at a short corner. The ball was injected by James MacPherson stopped and rolled into the D by Hughes for Anderson to unleash an unstoppable shot. Anderson scored his third goal from open play after good build up from Lucas Farndale. On the half hour Uddingston were awarded a short corner which found its way into the goal and on the thirty forth minute Uddingston scored again to tie the match. There was no more scoring and the game finished.

A great performance from the development team. It was good to have Dick Donaldson back from injury and to make it through the game.
We have to thank both Billy Anderson and Wullie Allan for helping in todays game. It just shows how the team can play with the addition of adult support in all areas of the pitch to help the youngsters. 
We have seen this group improve week on week so lets look forward to the second half of the season when we will win games.

Unfortunately the Committee have to remind the membership that match fees for the Hockey season are outstanding and need to be paid quickly, by on-line/cheque payment, or by setting up your Standing Order while there remains time to do so.
This year,  every SHU Club has to pay their Annual SHU Fees in 1 payment, versus the previous staged payment process through the season.   As the most successful club in Scotland, our fees for the year are £6,000 for this year and are due now.    This covers all Scottish Hockey Competition fees, SHU registration and insurance cover  and it's our duty to ensure we pay this in full without incurring additional cost penalties.

Kelburne Kaos Update

With at least 10 obstacles to navigate this day is sure to be fantastic fun! Ducking, diving, bobbing and a weaving your way round the course! This is an incredible opportunity to rally together as a hockey community and raise some funds for the club, the fact that you will have a blast is just a bonus!

On the day Kelburne Kaos will have staggered start times the main ones being 1pm, 1.45pm and 2.30pm. At 3.15pm the ladies and gents hockey teams will have the opportunity of a little friendly competition! There will be hot food and drinks for sale also the chance to buy some raffle tickets.
