Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Beat Edinburgh Uni 2-0 - 22.4.17

Today saw the final game of the season with Kelburne thinking a second place finish was on the cards. Before push back news was filtering through that Grange had lost to Western, which gave Kelburne the chance to claim an unexpected 13th league title in a row. Composure and control were the key messages before the game and the team delivered on this. Not very many chances where created in the first half but the Kelburne defense also made sure Edinburgh Uni did not get a single shot in on goal. The dead lock was broken midway through the half from a well worked penalty corner which Ben Peterson dispatched into the bottom corner. The score remained 1-0 at half time. More of the same was asked for in the second half and Kelburne did this by controlling most of the possession and creating a number of scoring chances. The second came when Lee Morton put a reverse stick cross into the circle which was deflected in by an Edinburgh Uni defender. Uni did create a few chances from short corners but these were well blocked by a solid Kelburne defensive line. The final whistle soon followed and the celebrations began.

Next up sees Kelburne going for the Scottish Cup trophy against Grange at Glasgow Green next week.

WDL Division 3 : Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 5s 0–2 Greenock 2s - 20.4.17

Kelburne 5`s played their final game of the season against Greenock Morton Men`s 2`s, who also happened to be the team that they played in their first match at the beginning of the season and ended with a 3-1 loss to Greenock after Kelburne had initially been 0-1 up at half time.

Match Report / Season Round-up:

The Kelburne 5`s team consisted of 5 senior players - Willie Hunt, Hamish Walker, Ryan Wood, Dick Donaldson and Club President Mark Fulton. The rest of the team with the exception of our talented young Goalkeeper Matthew Retson was made up of junior players ranging in ages from 11 years to 13 years old. At the start of the game the Greenock side started the match at a very high tempo which they maintained throughout the entire match and the quality of their play was at a much higher level than had been present in the first encounter between the 2 teams at the start of the season. The pace and skill level exhibited by the Greenock side surpassed most if not all the teams that Kelburne had played in the division throughout the course of the season so far. To Kelburne`s credit they managed to keep the score line to 0-0 in the first half, through sheer determination although they struggled at times to maintain possession and apply any pressure to Greenock inside their half. Several half chances were created though, through tireless running by club president Mark Fulton who managed to find space and pick up some long through balls which forced the Greenock goalkeeper to come off his line to block the attempts on goal. Dick Donaldson worked very hard in midfield to win possession but lacked support from the younger Kelburne midfield players who were `out muscled` by their Greenock counterparts. The Kelburne 5th team have made a habit this season of being level or in front of the opposition at half time but have then gone on to concede goals late on in the second half. History repeated itself as with less than 10 minutes to go the Greenock attack fired a lifted ball into the D which made it past the Kelburne defence into the centre of the D allowing a scramble for the ball which a Greenock player managed to score from. This was harsh on Kelburne but the reality was that Kelburne had started to tire under the constant pressure from the fit and physical Greenock side and the second goal followed not long after. Kelburne continued to try and get a goal back through Mark Fulton and Dick Donaldson who tried again and again to make scoring opportunities for the Kelburne Juniors but to no avail and the game finished 0-2 to Greenock.

Particular mention goes to Hamish Walker playing at centre back and a man who will freely admit to being of `advancing years` who had a fine game against a very fit, fast and physical Greenock side, running himself into the ground in the second half. Throughout the match Hamish used his experience to read the game excellently, making a number of important tackles and interceptions to break up the attacking play from Greenock and also to try and set up the Kelburne play going forwards. This season has been a very challenging one for the Men`s 5th team which in itself is a misnomer as the majority of the pool of players for the 5th team has been a group of boys varying in age from 11 up to 14 almost all of whom have been playing in their first full season of `adult hockey`. The Kelburne 5th team have easily won the prize in division 3 for having the youngest players forming the squad on a weekly basis. Several of the opposition teams in division 3 play with no juniors in their squad and the other teams which do have some juniors in their squad are generally several years older than the Kelburne juniors. The experience gained by the juniors who played for the 5th team this season will hopefully stand them in good stead for next season. There are several young talented players from the jockey section who hopefully will be coming along to the 5th team training after the summer and they will provide some healthy competition for places in the squad for next season. This may provide a few problems for the selection team picking the players for the various squads to ensure that all the young players get a regular run out but this can only be a good problem to have going forwards for the future of the club. I cannot fault the youngsters for their commitment this season in terms of turning up every week to training, on time and full of enthusiasm. Above all it needs to be fun and enjoyable to play and take part and hopefully we have managed to create an atmosphere where this is the case. Goal keeper Fionn Wilson who has turned up as a reserve, almost every week on match day fully kitted and ready to go for the warm up and to support the 5`s from the side lines. Fionn made his debut as goal keeper for the men`s 5`s team in a friendly match just prior to the start of the second half of the season. Several people need a mention of thanks for their input over the course of the season and their names are as follows. Top of the list is Ian McIntyre, 5`s team captain who puts a huge amount of his own free time into making sure that we have a full squad of players turning up to every match and making sure that all the fixtures and games are running as scheduled. This can be a difficult job on occasion as the other men`s teams in the club will regularly shuffle players about due to other players being unavailable. All the parents involved in bringing the boys to the various training sessions and matches and who stand out in all weathers to support the 5`s deserve a big pat on the back, their continued support makes a huge difference to the running of the team. Big thanks to Gary Stewart who should be re-titled team manager, and who has helped out almost every week on match day with the substitutions to ensure that all the youngsters making up the full 16 squad of players get an opportunity to have pitch time. Thank you also to the regular supply of umpires that Kelburne have available, who also give up their free time to turn up each week to umpire the 5`s games, and without which it should be remembered we would not be able to play. Lastly a big thank you to all the coaches involved at all levels in the club but in particular the coaches involved with the junior players who are helping to ensure that the future of the club is bright.

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 2s Win vs Grange Ladies 2s - 8.4.17

An unusually blisteringly hot spring day saw Kelburne Ladies 2s travel to Edinburgh to take on Grange Ladies 2s. Despite missing a number of regular players from their squad due to the start of the Easter holidays, which resulted in them travelling with just one reserve, the team was hopeful of continuing their run of good form that would see them further improve their position in the Championship League B table. However, it was apparent from the blow of the first whistle that Grange Ladies had other ideas. The opposition started very aggressively and quickly overcame a somewhat surprised Kelburne, creating chances that despite significant skill and bravery in goal by keeper Phoebe Jones Williams, eventually resulted in 3 goals against Kelburne in the first half. The shock score at half time was 0-3 Grange. But the spirited Kelburne’s Ladies 2s were not going to stand for this. And this positive attitude in the face of adversity, coupled with an inspiring team talk at half time by Manager, Dale Houston, proved nothing short of transformational. The squad regrouped, started communicating with each other again and, as a resulted, once again started to show the form that has seen a massive improvement in their performance over last season. The practiced and experienced Kelburne defence of Taylor Bain, Ellie Houston and Joy Fraser marshalled by Drew Berry put up strong resistance to the repeated Grange attacks. This, coupled with tireless work by the energetic midfield trio of Katrina Miller, Kirsty Gorman and Amy Crawford, sapped the drive and energy of the opposition. Skillful and strategic work at the front from birthday girl Bethany Allan and team mate Tara Patel saw Grange making some serious errors in the D and three short corners were won by Kelburne in quick succession. These were swiftly and clinically converted into unstoppable goals by talented veteran Kelburne player Berry, giving her a well-deserved hat trick. Kelburne’s comeback had created an exciting 3-3 challenge, with just 10 minutes to go. However, the team then had to hold on to this draw for a nailbiting 5 minutes as Grange attempted to mount a belated comeback. It fell to striker Rachel Bannatyne who seized the opportunity to pick up the pace, sending a precise and carefully timed pass up to fellow striker Lucy Bliss. Bliss continued the charge up the field, swept through the Grange defence and aggressively hammered home the winning goal with just 5 minutes to go. What a turnaround and a great team effort by the Kelburne Ladies 2s in a match that was played in a great competitive and sporting spirit.

Final score 4-3 Kelburne (Berry 3, Bliss 1).  Next up for the Kelburne Ladies 2s is a double header at the weekend against Erskine Stewart’s Melville Ladies 2s and University of Dundee Women’s 2s as they continue to press for a top 5 finish and increasing their positive goal difference.

Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 5s Draw Against Helensburgh 2s - 1.4.17

The young Kelburne 5s squad traveled to Hermitage Academy to play Helensburgh 2s in the penultimate game of the season. It was a smaller squad than normal due to holidays and injury but they welcomed back Mark Fulton for his second game of the season. Kelburne started the game without Peter Robertson who had been held up in traffic and with Gordon Martin kitted up to play in goals as normal keeper Douglas McEwan was unavailable. Young Callum Brown started at left back, a position he made his own during the match with some great tackling and distribution of the ball. The game started at a good pace with both teams pushing forward. Kelburne were enjoying the best of the play with Mark Fulton working unbelievably hard up front and Willie Hunt doing likewise in midfield. Alan Bryce marshalled the defence restricting Helensburgh to a few half chances with Mark, Jack Nelson and Rory McNeil creating some chances at the other end. Kelburne got the first goal of the game after some good work by Rory Semple and Rory McNeil, Mark Fulton found himself in the area and as he fired the ball towards the goal the Helensburgh keeper lost his bearings only to see the ball go into his goal. It was what the Kelburne play deserved. Helensburghs tactic of firing the ball into the area finally paid off when a pass found a Helenburgh player free in the area who slipped the ball past Gordon Martin. Kelburne continued to have the better of the play and Mark Fulton fired home an unstoppable shot for his, and Kelburnes, second goal of the game with a few minutes left in the first half. HT Helensburgh 2s 1-2 ProLife Kelburne 5s Helensburgh came out quickly in the second half and began to push Kelburne back, leaving them to hit on the break. Some great work by Ryan Wood at right back and Gordon Martin in goals made sure that the lead was maintained. In midfield Calum Jamieson and Sam Hunt were working back to help the defence and then working to get the ball to the forwards, but it was Willie Hunt in the centre of midfield who held the line. 10 minutes into the second the ball broke to Peter Robertson in the Helensburgh area but he shot narrowly wide. Helensburgh continued to push forward but Kelburne were still dangerous. Rory Semple picked up the ball on the right hand side, drove into the area but had his first shot blocked by the keeper. He managed to pick up the ball from the rebound and his reverse shot went narrowly past the far post. Callum Stewart continued to work hard on the left hand side trying to help create some chances. As last week Kelburne began to tire and Helensbugh finally found a way past Gordon Martin with 5 minutes to go. A draw was probably the right result but credit to all the Kelburne players and to the supporters who encouraged the team throughout the game.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Convincing Win vs Watsonians 6 - 1 on 8.4.17

Today saw the penultimate game of the regular season for Kelburne against a Watsonians team who are sitting mid table. The game started with Kelburne controlling the game and creating some good scoring opportunities. The first goal came from good team play with the ball going from one side of the pitch to the other and then finally finding veteran Johnny Christie in the circle who calmly put the ball into the net. A second soon followed from a breakdown at a short corner. Lee Morton was able to fire a reverse stick shot into the goal to give Kelburne a two goal lead. Kelburne continued to press and create chance but the score remained 2-0 at half time. Kelburne continued where they left off in the second half and made it 3 when German import Jonas Nommassoonn sent a drag flick into the top corner. Watsonians then found a way back into the game from a short corner deflection. This pushed Kelburne back on to the front foot as Jonas scored his 2nd of the game from a nice open play move. Lee Morton notched up his second and Kelburnes 5th soon after and the final goal of the game came from Iain Scholefield who sent a reverse stick shot into the corner of the net. A solid performance from Kelburne has kept the pressure on Grange at the top of the league.

Next up is Edinburgh University in two weeks time.

Kelburne Trio Represent Scottish Universities at Home Nations Event

Congratulations to Molly Godfrey, Lee Morton and Craig Morton who this week were selected as part of the Scottish Universities squads to compete in the Home Nations event in Edinburgh against England and Wales. 

In close competition, the Mens side won their event beating England 3-1 in the final game to secure the win. The women's side competed well finishing 3rd after close games with Wales and England

Kelburne Players to Support Teenage Cancer Trust on 2.4.17

Kelburne & UWS Players are Taking Part in a Charity Hockey Tournament to Raise Money for the Teenage Cancer Trust - this Sunday 2nd April.

Kelburne and UWS (University of the West of Scotland) players have got together the 'team' and are ready to enter the Charity Hockey Tournament being held at Clydesdale Hockey Club on Sunday!

Ex-Kelburne member, Gavin Bantages, has invited teams to join together and play in a charity hockey tournament to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Gavin's close friend Hamish was diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year and has undergone chemotherapy treatment. After a chat with Hamish about the idea of holding a fund-raising tournament and where the proceeds should go, Hamish asked if the proceeds might be donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust that has been supporting him throughout his treatment.  Hamish assisted Kelburne at the 2016 Euro Hockey Club Championships when the club was organizing the event at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre last May.  Hamish was one of the PA System's trio!

Come along and support this worthwhile event and cheer on your team!

Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 5s 1-1 to Clydesdale

Pro-Life Kelburne Men's 5s Draw with Clydesdale 4s 1-1 on 25.3.17

The young Kelburne team took to the pitch looking to get back into winning form after some narrow defeats, welcoming back goal keeper David Ogilvie. They knew it would be difficult as they faced an experienced Clydesdale team who were sitting near the top of the league. The game started at a good pace with both defences being in top form leaving very few chances. Don Tervit and Willie Hunt made sure that the Clydesdale forwards did not create any real chances. In midfield Dick Donaldson helped drive the team forward but with little success. The first half played out with both teams at stalemate.

HT Kelburne 0-0 Clydesdale - Don Tervit moved up front to try and give the young Kelburne team a bit more of a cutting edge and this worked as he managed to hold play up and allow Kelburne to start creating more chances. 10 minutes into the 2nd half Don Tervit strode into the area and fired an unstoppable shot to give Kelburne the lead. This lifted the spirits of the Kelburne team and for the next 15 minutes the youngsters played some of their best hockey of the season. Callum Brown, Calum Jamieson, Rory McNeil, Roc Hart and Callum Flemming in midfield with Sam Hunt and Jack Nelson playing up front were all working hard and showing great endeavour. They held the ball up and were brave enough to take on the Clydesdale players. With 5 minutes to go Kelburne won a penalty corner with a chance to clinch victory but the Clydesdale keeper was on hand to pull off an excellent save. From the subsequent counter attack one of the Clydesdale youngsters fired a reserve shot from the edge of the area for an equaliser. The final whistle followed soon after.

Next Saturday, 1st April, the young Kelburne team travel to face Helenburgh 2s at Hermitage Academy for the penultimate game of the season with a 12-15 pushback.

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 3s Beat Clydesdale

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 3s Beat Clydesdale 5s - 18.3.17

ProLife Kelburne Ladies 3's hosted Clydesdale Ladies 5's on Saturday in the West district second division. Glasgow Green was the venue for this local derby with both squads fielding large youthful squads. Pro-Life Kelburne opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Ambar Hendry calmly slotted the ball past the Clydesdale keeper following a left sided attack. This goal was quickly followed by another after Neave Halliday stole into the circle from right back and screamed a deflected ball into the bottom left hand corner. Kelburne looked very comfortable at this point and just before half time they consolidated this lead further when Georgia Jennings jumped on a rebound off the keeper to ensure the ball hitcthed the back of the net. At half time the score was 3-0 to the home side.

The second half began as much as the first had finished, with Kelburne commanding possession of the ball and utilising the width down both flanks. Nevertheless although some great right side crosses came in from Halliday Kelburne failed to increase their lead. Much composure was required at the other end however as Clydesdale broke at speed on a number of occasions. Nevertheless although seven corners were conceded, the Kelburne defence stood strong and calmly dealt with each in turn. The game finished 3-0 to ProLife Kelburne 3's, who continue to climb beyond their mid table league position. They look forward to hosting Garnock HC next Saturday again at Glasgow Green. Most valuable player this week who was voted as captain Carol Feeney, whose goal line clearance earned her a split knuckle alongside this award.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Beat Hillhead 4-1 on 11.3.17

Today Kelburne continued their quest for a 13th consecutive league title with a home game against local rivals Hillhead. The first half was a case of taken chances with Hillhead creating 3 short corners in the early stages but failed to convert any. Kelburne responded with 2 short corner goals from Josh Cairns to give the home team a bit of breathing space. Other chances were created by Kelburne but a mixture of good goal keeping and a goal line clearance kept Hillhead in the tie at half time. Coach Sheppard wanted Kelburne to up their intensity in the 2nd half and Kelburne responded to this by again scoring from another short corner. This time a well worked routine enabled Ben Peterson to score into the bottom corner. Kelburne continued to dominate possession and create chances but couldn't find the fourth goal. Hillhead finally responded from one of their many short corners to bring the game to 3-1 with a glimmer of hope to getting back into the tie. This glimmer soon disappeared as Josh Cairns once again stepped up to complete his hat trick of short corner flicks.

The final whistle brought Kelburne another 3 points with a decent performance. The team now move on to their next game against Gordonians in two weeks time.

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 3s Draw Against Ferguslie Ladies

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 3's Draw Against Ferguslie - 11.3.17

Pro Life Kelburne Ladies 3's hosted Ferguslie Ladies in the West District derby game on Saturday. The young squad started well and had the majority of play in the opening 10 minute spell. The opening goal was scored by Kirsty Loudon on the 15th minute mark, when a strong run and shot was deflected past the Ferguslie keeper. This was followed 10 minutes later by an individual strike and goal from Philippa Saddler. Saddler pounced on a hit out from the back and rounded the defender prior to slotting the ball into the bottom corner. Ferguslie quickly responded to this when a long pass and break away play was calmly slotted past the Kelburne keeper. However Kelburne once again found an answer and a lovely left side attack was converted by Eliza Caven from the top of the circle. At half time the score was 3-1 to ProIife Kelburne. In the second half Kelburne maintained a large amount of the possession and their holding tactic looked like it was really working. Nevertheless after failing to convert a series of corners and then conceding the only corner their opponents got at the other end they found themselves up against it in the final 5 minutes with the score at 3-2. Unfortunately the experience of Ferguslie pulled through as they broke in the final minute to once again find the Kelburne net. The score finished 3 each at the final whistle and once again Neave Halliday was voted most valuable player. Kelburne Ladies return to action next week at home at Glasgow Green to Western Wildcats.

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 2s Lose Out to Stirling Wanderers

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 2's Lose to Stirling Wanderers 3-5 on 12.3.17

The game had a rocky start for Kelburne with Emma Ryan getting an ankle injury and having to go off within the first minute of the game. However they soon recovered and the first goal of the match was scored by Kelburne due to Lucy Bliss stealing the ball and running up the pitch where she crashed the ball in for Lucy Dunlop on post. The Stirling Wanderers came back fighting however despite their continous presence and attacking in Kelburnes D they scored only one goal before half time.

Within the first 5 minutes of the second half the Stirling Wanderers had won a short corner in which they scored on. However, Kelburne came back and a good pass up the right to Bethany Allan who crashed the ball into the D lead to Lucy Bliss scoring Kelburnes second goal. But despite the best efforts of Kelburne's defense, Stirling Wanderers scored 2 more goals (one from open play and the other from another short corner). Despite this Kelburne didn't give up and in the final 5 minutes Holly Pitts scored Kelburnes third goal from a rebound from the goalie. This put Kelburne back in the match and they came back stronger with Holly Hendry and Kathryn Meenan relentlessly annoying the goalie with shots however with 1 minute to goal a Stirling Wanderer defender managed to clear the ball to their high striker who managed to score the final goal of the match. Kelburne played exceedingly well despite the continous pressure the faced in their D. Lucy Bliss and Kathryn Meenan both took advantage of any breaks Kelburne got by running the ball up the pitch and taking shots at the goalie. Lucy Dunlop who normally plays for 3rds also did very well, scoring a goal for the 2nds. Kelburne Womens 2s hope to get their winning streak back next week against Ayr.

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 3s Lose to Broomhill - 4.3.17

Unfortunately, the Kelburne ladies 3s lost 4-1 to Broomhill at home in Glasgow Green. Despite being 1-1 at half time following a goal from Rachael Ewing-Day, the young squad conceded 3 in the second half to lose the tie. Neave Halliday was voted as most valuable player after a strong defensive performance.

Next week they face Ferguslie Ladies.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Beat Menzieshill 4-2

MNL Div 1: Bromac Kelburne 1st XI Beat Grove Menzieshill - 5.3.17

Today saw Kelburne's fourth game in two weeks when they faced Menzieshill at home in the league. Menzieshill who are currently sitting 3rd in the league would be a tough test for the boys from Paisley. The game started at a great pace with Kelburne out the blocks quickly creating a number of chances. None of these were taken and the game turned on its head when Nick Finlayston received a 10 minute yellow. This allowed Menzieshill back into the game but Kelburne's defense held out. Nick then turned from sinner to saint by deflecting a high ball into the oppositions goal to give Kelburne the lead. The scoreline quickly moved to 2-0 as Lee Morton intercepted a loose pass, waltzed into the circle and fired in an unstoppable shot past the keeper. Menzieshill then came right back into the game before half time with two goals. The first was from a hit and hope ball into the circle, which was pounced on by the attacker. The second half was one where Kelburne had to dig deep against a very good Menzieshill side who had chances of there own to take the lead but two quick goals from Lee Morton, who scored a tap in back post and Ben Peterson unleashing a trademark reverse stick shot ensured Kelburne came away from this tricky fixture with the 3 points they required to keep the title charge on track.

Today saw Kelburne face a young and enthusiastic Wildcats side in the League at Auchenhowie and it was the Wildcats who looked the brighter team in the opening exchanges. But they could not take the lead and missed a number of chances. Kelburne capitalized on this and against the run of play managed to sneak the first goal as Nick Finlayston got a tap in at the back post. Western were not to be denied for long as they soon leveled up proceedings scoring a scrappy goal before half time.

Some stern words from coach Sheppard at half time kicked the Paisley team into life and they soon took the lead from a trademark corner from Josh Cairns. This seemed to ease the pressure on Kelburne who were then able to dictate play and creating good chances to extend the lead. This eventually happened at another penalty corner as Cairns again produced another fierce shot which left the keeper with no chance. Veteran Johnny Christie then wrapped up proceedings with an easy tap in at the back post after a lovely flowing team move. This wasn't perhaps a vintage performance from the Paisley team but it was three points in the bag against a very energetic Wildcats side.
