Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 5s Draw vs Helensburgh 3s
/On 30.9.17 - The young Kelburne 5s development team headed to Helensburgh for the second time this season having drawn 2-2 with their 2s a few weeks earlier. Helensburgh started well taking the game to Kelburne and creating a few half chances as the Kelburne team started slowly. And it wasn't too long before a Helensburgh player sneaked in at the back post to give the home team the lead. This seemed to waken up the Kelburne players as they began to pass the ball about and create some chances. On 3 occasions youngster Tommy Austin linked up with Rory Donaldson who found himself in space in the Helensburgh D. The first 2 occasions Rory snatched at the ball and his chance was gone but on the third occasion the Helensburgh keeper had to pull off a good save at his near post. Kelburne now were on the front foot with only a couple of Helensburgh breakaways to contend with the goal their play deserved eventually came from Don Tervit when he fired home from an acute angle. As the half came to a close both teams tried to get the upper hand but the score remained at 1-1 HT Helensburgh 3s 1-1 Kelburne 5s The second half started with Kelburne in control and it would stay that way for almost all of the 2nd half. Helensburgh hit on the counter attack but on the whole were being forced back by some good play from the Kelburne youngsters. Shots from Sam Hunt and Aaron O'Hear missed the target or forced the Helensburgh keeper into good saves. A rare Helensburgh break was bravely saved by youngster Rowan McClure in goals and he quickly followed up with a second save kicking the ball clear. A sublime bit of skill by Fergus, when surrounded by 3 Helensburgh players, allowed him to somehow find his way into the area and his shot narrowly missed the target. As so often happens Kelburne were caught out by a sucker punch with 15 minutes to go. A break down the right hand side and the resultant shot was bravely saved by Rowan but unfortunately the ball fell to the Helensburgh player who made no mistake. Rowan was injured during the goal and had to leave the pitch with Peter Robertson taking over as kicking back. Kelburne continued to push forward looking for an equaliser. Several chances fell to the team but a little more composure was required and they could not get that elusive goal. Finally, with 2 minutes to go, veteran Don Tervit skipped into the area and past a couple of players and slotted the ball home. It was a thoroughly deserved goal but the team will be disappointed not to have won. All the youngsters and the not so young deserve credit for battling to the end which is becoming a trait of this team.
