Young Kelburne Mens' 5s Beat Hillhead 5s 2-1
/26.10.19 - On a blowy but beautiful day at Glasgow Green 11 youngsters and two adults don their Amber jerseys to take on the Hillhead 5’s. The whistle blows and almost straight away Hillhead put a ball on target, no bother for the young keeper Fiónn Wilson who makes a magnificent left hand save only to be dashed three minutes later when Hillhead strike from the centre of the D to make it 1-0. Eight minutes in and Kelburne seized their first chance with a shot from Callum Stewart comfortably saved by the opposing keeper. After a scramble in the D Kelburne win a short corner, not a problem for the young team as Callum Brown keeps his cool as it hits the backboard 1-1. Young Sam Hunt passed to the younger Tommy Austin to get the team out a sticky spot, a great ball from Tommy through the middle, leads to a solid goal from Callum Stewart 2-1. With only 17 minutes gone there has been some fantastic hockey on display by the young Kelburne side! A sharp break by Hillhead is not good enough for 5’s first timer Fraser Scott who passes to Andrew McGrane who confidently strides up the wing, Hillhead make a quick turnaround and keeper Fiónn is faced with a 121 situation but confidently commands his goal and sees the challenge off. Equal domination continues with breaks from both sides. A nifty move from Rory Donaldson rounding numerous players and then crossing to the D where Andrew skilfully leaves for a Tommy strike which goes just wide….all this excitement and the half time whistle has only just went! An early short for Hillhead is sent wide by Fiónn, a break for Kelburne leads to a halfway line tussle where Jared takes a sore tackle and retires to the bench for a few minutes to recover. Amazing pressure from the youngsters with a constant battle for possession despite the intimidating roar of the Hillhead keeper. Fantastic work in midfield by Callum Brown with breaks from Tommy and Rory sees Kelburne pressing for a 3rd goal, although various attempts from Sam, Rory, Andrew, Jared and Dick to name only a few the Hillhead keeper does his job well. After another save by Fiónn, it’s clear the young team have Hillhead rattled as some strong challenges creep in…pressure, pressure, pressure. With only minutes to go Hillhead are awarded a short corner - Fiónn stops the shot which projects into the air and he confidently strikes it with his stick, 2nd short corner awarded as the whistle goes and the full Kelburne team are running back, the ball rolls wide…full time 2-1 Kelburne.
