Kelburne Mens' 5s Miss Out to GHK 1s, but only just!

On 6.4.19 - The young Kelburne 5s team travelled to Anniesland to play GHK 1s who recently had moved down from the league above. Missing Dick Donaldson, Don Tervit and Michael Carnachan it was going to be a difficult task. From the first whistle the youngsters took the game to GHK which unsettled the home team. They created several chances but just could not put them away. They moved the ball quickly from defence to attack and when called to defended bravely. Unfortunately with 10 minutes to go until half time Kelburne conceded a penalty corner and from this a GHK forward slipped in at the back post to score.

HT GHK 1s 1-0 Kelburne 5s From the start of the second half Kelburne continued to attack GHK looking for an equaliser but could not find a way past the inform GHK keeper. The youngsters worked really hard and continued to cause problems to GHK by playing some fast flowing hockey. It was against the run of play that GHK scored their second as Kelburne continued to push forward. That was how the game finished but full credit to the Kelburne youngsters who showed real commitment and endeavour and deserved more from this game. It was a real pleasure for the coaches to see the youngsters play to their full ability and give the GHK team a real fright - FT GHK 1s 2-0 Kelburne 5s

Next Saturday 13th April the young Kelburne 5s team travel to Eastwood High School to play Giffnock 2s with a 1-30pm pushback and are hoping to continue their fine form.

Kelburne Mens' 5s Draw Against Giffnock 1s 1-1

On 23.3.19 - 1st half: Kelburne 5s set out a very experienced team, with the addition of some on form youngsters. After settling into the game Kelburne gradually increased the pressure on Giffnock, who at best, were limited to the occasional counter attack. Kelburne were rewarded for their hard work after a flurry of shots saved by a very agile Giffnock keeper, a clearance picked up by Michael Caranchan was clinically fired low into the corner of the goal. A few substitutions were made as halftime approached but unfortunately Kelburne seemed to lose their momentum and it wasn’t long before Giffnock would capitalise, levelling before the break. HT Kelburne 5s 1-1 Giffnock 1s 2nd half: The positive attitude of the Kelburne 5s was evident as they tried to regain their grip on the game. Obviously buoyed by their performance in the first half hour of the match, they knew they could win this game. A couple of penetrating runs from Dick Donaldson came close and a similar effort form Sam Hunt forced the keeper to pull of a wonderful save. The Kelburne youngsters also managed to stretch the Giffnock defence a number of times, hitting the baseline and firing dangerous balls across the face of the goal but unfortunately, nobody was able to convert. It was starting to look like the game was destined to be a draw as both teams searched for the winner but just lacked the killer finish. In the end Kelburne got the very least they deserved and can be proud of the effort put in by the whole team. FT Kelburne 5s 1-1 Giffnock 1s

Next Saturday 30th March Kelburne 5s welcome Clydesdale 4s to Glasgow Green with a 4-30pm pushback

Kelburne Mens' 5s Beat Clydesdale 4s 3-0

On 30.3.19 - A warm sunny afternoon set the scene for the match between Kelburne 5s and Clydesdale 4s. Only 1 point separated the teams before push back with both teams looking for the 3 points to secure their position in Division 2 and Kelburne looking to continue a late push for promotion. Both teams had a mix of young and old and the game was played in an excellent spirit throughout. The first half was even and whilst the hockey was good, it was slow and had the feeling of an end of season game. The highlights of the first half was an excellent reverse stick tommyhawk into the top corner of the net from Tommy after he found space in a crowded D and a penalty corner conversion from Dick (2-0). Clydesdale played well in the first half and had some sustained periods of pressure, 3 corners in quick succession required Fionn and Gordon to clear goal bound shots. The evergreen Alan showed positional excellence in being available high on the right. However, his solid crosses could not be met by the forwards (something to work on!) Both team’s old guys found the pitch difficult and there were many spectacular slips and falls. A popular shout from the sidelines was ‘Dick’s decked it again’. Coach Willie was far from happy at half time and called for more urgency, a change in formation and a full press. The team responded and totally dominated the second half. This was demonstrated by young Rowan, second half Goalkeeper, not having to touch the ball and Big Gordon asking for his deckchair. Alan and Rory stayed higher up the park and Don was able to use his skill within their 25. Dick continued to dominate the centre of the pitch and Tommy and Jared showed both tenacity and skill in plentiful quantities. The size of the opposition does not matter to our Kelburne youngsters. Any second half Clydesdale attacks that got through our midfield were rapidly dismissed by the ever reliable back four of Willie, Big G, Jack and Ewan. Jack has quickly made right back his own and was excellent throughout in both defence and distribution. Kelburne attacked with precision and pace and Rory almost added to the score with two hard low shots, which were saved by a busy goalkeeper. The Kelburne pressure was eventually rewarded with an excellent penalty corner routine and a firm low corner shot from Alan (3-0). He almost increased his tally when a neat pass from the right gave an easier opportunity, but the shot was pulled and he ended up on his back - LOL. The domination and pressure continued with the second half subs – Iain, Andrew, Sam, Dylon and Hamish. However, despite a multitude of circle penetrations, shots and penalty corners the score remained the same. The Clydesdale Goalkeeper was without doubt their man of the match and made numerous excellent saves including several from an ever improving Andrew. Converting circle penetrations to positive goal outcomes will be a key coaching point in the weeks to come. There was a lot of attacking play down the left with Dylon and Sam interchanging passes and cutting through the defence at will. Kelburne felt that they had scored a fourth after a lovely finish from Sam from a penalty corner routine, but the far umpire thought that the ball had not left the D. At the end of the game it is Kelburne that’s is looking up the table with an outside chance of a top two finish. Giffnock are currently well ahead in second, but only have three games to play and will find it difficult to secure points from Hillhead 4 or the new improved GHK. Kelburne 4 and Rottenrow are 5 points behind Giffnock with a game in hand with similar teams to play including Kelburne 5s. Kelburne 5s are still in the battle, but there is a long way to go.

Kelburne Mens 5s Lose Out to Hillhead 5s 1-2

THE FULL STORY

On 2.3.19 - Kelburne 5s edged out by experienced Hillhead 5s. Saturday 2nd March. The hottest February on record seemed a distant memory as Kelburne 5s faced Hillhead 5s at a rain soaked Lower Windyedge. The mix of experience and youth in the Kelburne team was underlined by the fact that many of the team were playing their second game in as many days, having played an Under 15s match on Friday night. The opening period of the game saw neither team creating any clear opportunities. Kelburne had the majority of possession with Dick Donaldson’s prompting passes and Sam Hunt, Tommy Austin and Nicholas Knox taking turns driving at the Hillhead defence. Kelburne were also solid at the back with Gordon Robbie and Willy Hunt keeping Hillhead outside the D and fullback Jack Nelson confidently running out with the ball. On 12 minutes, the Hillhead defence failed to clear an initial attempt on goal from Sam then a shot on the turn by Nicholas was saved by the Hillhead keeper (who was to have a major influence on the result). Two Kelburne short corners followed in as many minutes, with Dick forcing fine saves from the Hillhead keeper on both occasions. Kelburne continued to press, with a short corner coming on 16 minutes but the Hillhead defence were out quickly to close it down. Shortly after, the Hillhead keeper was again in action saving a shot from Sam. Midway through the half, Kelburne brought on fresh legs with Calum Jamieson, Jared Bolland, Andrew McGrane and Rory Donaldson all coming on. Hillhead were now starting to come into the game and on 19 minutes, Kelburne keeper Fionn Wilson was called upon for the first time, saving a bouncing ball in the D and deflecting it onto the post. Hillhead then forced two short corners but both were dealt with by the Kelburne defence. The rain was constant at this stage and the pitch was becoming slippery. Players on both teams were losing their footing and taking minor tumbles.

After soaking up the pressure, Kelburne pushed forward once more. On 29 minutes, the Hillhead keeper produced another save following a short corner, then a Kelburne pass from the left was just in front of Andrew’s stick as he ran in on the keeper. Nearing half time, the game tilted back towards Hillhead who tried using a tactic of lifting the ball to runners on the right wing but young Dylan Bradley handled the situations well. The half ended with a Hillhead shot going wide but it came from outside the D. HT Kelburne 5s 0-0 Hillhead 5s The opening minutes of the second half were to prove costly for Kelburne, with Hillhead starting quickly and almost immediately forcing a short corner. From the pass out, a low shot from the forward found the backboard to put Hillhead in front. After the goal, Kelburne immediately broke forward and a reverse stick shot from Sam went just wide but Hillhead were on top at this stage in the half. A short corner was kept out by Kelburne before Hillhead again had the ball in the goal. However, the forward was adjudged to have committed a foul before shooting and the goal was disallowed. The game began to open up as Hillhead sought a second whilst Kelburne strove for the equaliser. Ian McIntyre and Hamish Walker were passing into the channels for the young forwards to run onto and in 46 minutes, Kelburne had two opportunities. The first, a shot kicked clear by the Hillhead keeper, the second, a pass across the D that sadly found no takers. With the floodlights on, the rain continued to teem down although rumours of animals lining up two by two outside the nearby Scotstoun shipyard were unconfirmed. On 53 minutes, the balance of the match shifted yet again with Hillhead getting their first real chance since opening the scoring. A shot from a short corner was well saved by Fionn Wilson who was then off his line quickly to break down another Hillhead attack. The game continued to ebb and flow but moving into the last 10 minutes, Kelburne continued to drive forward. A lifted attempt from Dick went just over followed by a shot from Rory which saw another good save by the Hillhead keeper.

With 3 minutes remaining Kelburne’s efforts had finally paid off. A darting run into the D by Dick saw the ball laid off to Andrew. His quick shot was blocked by the Hillhead defence but the ball broke nicely to Rory who calmly finished to level the score. Had the game ended a draw, it would have been a fair result but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. With the final attack of the game, Hillhead came forward and played a ball towards goal. Following a clash in the D, the ball broke between two Hillhead forwards and despite Fionn blocking the path to goal for the first, the second forward managed to spin and place the ball inside the post from a tight angle, sealing the win for Hillhead. Irrespective of the result, the young players in the Kelburne team can take many positives from their performance against a more experienced and physically stronger team. Indeed, but for a series of excellent saves by the Hillhead keeper, the score line could have been different. Well done lads!

FT Kelburne 5s 1-2 Hillhead 5s. Next Game – Kelburne 5s face Rottenrow 2s at Glasgow Green on 16 March with a 4:30pm pushback.

Kelburne Mens 5s Lose Out to Hillhead 4s

On 16.2.19 - The game started at 12 o’clock with a Kelburne taking the pushback against league leaders Hillhead 4s. After 3 minutes Hillhead scored an early goal giving Kelburne the worst possible start. Hillhead continued to push forward and were rewarded with 4 short corners which were well defended. All throughout the game there is good teamwork from Nicholas Knox and Tommy Austin up the right wing creating lots of chances to get the ball into the D. At the other end good defending by Gordon Robbie stopped Hillhead from creating many more chances in the Kelburne D. When Hillhead made it through young Fionn Wilson in goals pulled off some good saves leaving Hillhead frustrated. It was overall a pretty good half and Kelburne and they hoped that they could get back on level terms in the second half. HT Kelburne 5s 0-1 Hillhead 4s The second half started off quickly with another Hillhead goal in 2 minutes. Kelburne were disappointed but pushed forward to try and get back into the match. Jack Nelson pulled of some good tackles playing right back but got injured and had to be subbed by Andrew Stewart. Hillhead scored again 9 minutes in making it 3-0 to Hillhead leaving Kelburne with an uphill struggle. Andrew McGrane received a pass at the Hillhead 25 and drives towards the D but is unfortunately tackled a few metres out. Hillhead replied with another goal in 54 minutes making it 4-0. Kelburne continued to push but it was Hillhead who scored the final goal with 3 minutes to go making it a 5-0 loss for the Kelburne 5s.

FT Kelburne 5s 0-5 Hillhead 4s - Next week Kelburne 5s hope to bounce back against Uddingston 4s with a 12 o’clock pushback at Glasgow Green.

Kelburne Men's 5s Beat Hillhead 5s 3-1

Saturday 26.1.19 - First game back at outdoor saw the usual balance of youth and experience take the field at Glasgow Green. Captain Ian and Peter were on the side-lines but there was plenty of experience to keep the kids in line with Gordon Robbie, Ewan Crawford and Willie Hunt controlling things from the back, making solid tackles as Hillhead pushed ahead on their first attack. However Kelburne started well and after some lovely play between old and young, Dick Donaldson was released at the top of the D and as he pulled the ball onto his reverse he was crudely up ended, getting a shot away as he landed in a belly flop. More intricate passing and team build up play put Nic Knox in one on one on the goalie, with his initial shot saved he coolly slotted away the rebound, but after some discussion between the umpires the goal was disallowed. Defensively the old guard and Jack Nelson who was having an excellent game kept everything tight and much of the attacking hockey involved the whole team. Dick and Don Tervit pretty much controlled midfield with Jared Bolland and Hamish Walker causing all sorts of problems, bombing up and down the flanks. Finally there was a breakthrough as some great passing between Nic and Dick played Don into the circle and he smashed it home for the opening goal. And it wasn’t long before Dick was occupying the Hillhead defence again, managing to release his pass to Sam Hunt who created space with some lovely skill to slot home Kelburne’s second of the game. Sam, Jack, Jared and Hamish made way for Calum Jamieson, Tommy Austin, Dylan Bradely and Rory Donaldson and all carried on with the free flowing and fast paced play. Don was playing as though he got new knees for Christmas as he zig zagged through the Hillhead defence as did Rory, Calum and Tommy which lead to Dylan getting into good attacking positions and pressure mounting on the Hillhead defence. HT Kelburne 5s 2-0 Hillhead 5s.

Second half started as the first had ended with pressure from the off. Jack played a fantastic ball to Nic who crossed for Sam who narrowly missed the target. This was followed by Jared winning a corner and Sam injected to Don who slipped it left to Nic who fed it back to Sam on the baseline and his shot was stopped by the defender’s foot on the line. Hamish stepped up to take the penalty flick but unfortunately it went passed post.

Gordon seemed to have a rush of blood to his head as he drove into the opposition half and kept going which led to a short corner. This was slipped right to Don who struck it with force slightly high and the goalie attempted to stop it with his glove, but it was only deflected into the goal. Hillhead were unhappy but it had hit the backboard so the goal stood and we were 3-0 up. Quite quickly Hillhead managed to force their way into our 25, Fionn Wilson had not been called on much during the game and he closed the angle well and forced the forward to shoot wide. Unfortunately on their next attack Fionn was unsighted when shot came in and Hillhead scored making it 3-1. Tommy replaced Don and difference in age and height made no difference to the game as Kelburne continued to dominate in all areas. He managed to take Hillhead’s right back to the cleaners and laid back for Sam who forced a great save from their goalie. Rory and Dick played some lovely one twos and this ended in Dylan being played in forcing a great save from Hillhead’s keeper on one occasion and solid defending on another. Calum on the other side showed some great skill making a lovely pass for Dick to take a shot that hit the side board of goal. So first game back and as supporters we had the pleasure of a great team performance, solid defending, creative midfield play and lots of shots on goal. The boys played with maturity and the oldies played with composure and youthful energy. Great performance!!!! FT Kelburne 5s 3-1 Hillhead 5s. Next week Kelburne 5s travel to Notre Dame High School in Greenock to play Greenock 2s with a 2pm pushback .

Kelburne Men's 4s Beat Giffnock 1s 5-2

On Saturday 26.1.19 - Kelburne Men's 4s looked to round off their first half of fixtures with a game against Giffnock 1s at Glasgow Green. The game saw 2nd v 3rd with 3 points for Kelburne seeing them stretch their lead in 2nd place and a win for Giffnock would see them retake 2nd place from the 4s after a 1 all draw with Greenock the week before. The game began at a frantic pace with Giffnock having the best of the early exchanges mainly thanks to Kelburne being wasteful when in possession. Giffnock continued to have the best of the play and started to increase the tempo leading to several opportunities but no final outcome. That was until mid way through the first half when Giffnock benefitted from a dubious call to slot past the keeper and take the lead. As the half wore on Giffnock continued to have the best of the ball and started to have more chances - on the stroke of half-time they won a short corner, due to Kelburne giving away possession, and duly slotted home to head into half time 2 goals to the good. Being behind at half time is nothing new for this Kelburne side with 4 wins coming from a losing position at half time. The message at the break was to ‘‘..be confident and let’s play hockey our way, the Kelburne way!..’’ The message was received well and Kelburne came racing out of the blocks and were back on the hunt - within 5 minutes with Colin Fairbairn slotting around the on-rushing keeper after some great build up play. This was to be a benchmark for a fantastic second half performance from the men in yellow as Kelburne were quickly back on level terms with great build up play between the Fairbairn twins and Mark Connor to allow for Colin to get his second goal with another shot slotting past the on-rushing goalkeeper. There was then along pause in the game due to a head injury sustained by the Giffnock Captain after the ball flicked up off James Currie's stick. The Kelburne players quickly rallied round and helped Ziggy who thankfully will not have any long term issues. After approximately 25 minutes the game was resumed with Kelburne continuing to dominate with a 3rd goal quickly following with some more great play allowing for Mark Connor to drill in from a Colin Fairbairn ball.

Giffnock came alive briefly in the game after Kelburne's 3rd and started to move the ball around earning 2 short corners, both which were saved on the line by skipper Ryan Wood. The pressure wasn't to last as Kelburne took hold of the game with Colin Fairbairn wrapping up his hat trick with some more great play between Kevin, Colin and Mark. The final touch was added courtesy of a short corner as James Currie drilled home from the top of the D before Shaun Jardine got himself carded, AGAIN, to bring a tough game to a climax. A fantastic second half performance from the men in yellow which sees them open up a 4 point gap between 2nd and 3rd and bring the gap between 1st and 2nd down to 5 points. Next week the 4s host Uddingston 4s at Glasgow Green with a 12pm push back.

the NEW KELBURNE HOCKEY KIT is here..

'PHASING OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW!

The moment you’ve all been waiting for - the new Kelburne kit has arrived!

Team captains will let you know when and where you can pitch up to try the new kit items on for size.

If your existing kit is almost new and/or fits you well you don’t have to make the change immediately, the current Kelburne Stanno kit has reached its end and stocks are almost exhausted. Kit Bundle buys are subsidised by the club.

See explanation below giving the rationale behind the move to the new-look kit:

Dear Member, Player, Parent,

A short note to inform our membership that we have reached the end of our playing deal with Stanno and we will move to our new Kelburne kit from 2019, our 50th birthday year.

Our 1st XI Gents team are already enjoying this quality kit and we will phase in our other teams, Ladies, Gents & Juniors, over the next 3 months.   Your playing Rep (coach or captain) will pass on more information to you in the coming weeks. Samples are already in circulation across the Ladies teams and gents samples will be in circulation this week.

We are returning to our original amber colour for the next 4 years when the next kit refresh will take place (the Stanno kit only lasts 3 years) and we’ve teamed up with the Adidas brand for our on-field playing kit and selected quality non-branded training kit (e.g. hoodies, track-pants, padded jackets) for the rest of our kit.  Over the 4 year term, this is a better overall deal for players.

The Club will subsidise the first order bundle we make to Gilmour Sports to get teams up and running quickly. You will see the details in the order form your representative will have when taking your sizes and order.  You can also order ‘strip only’ by simply selecting in the box provided, however this price is not subsidised.

After this one-time only Club order, all future individual strip or bundle kit orders will only be taken on-line at the Gilmour Sports website, which will be updated to reflect the new kit available.   It’s worth noting that teams playing European, National & Regional League hockey often require more kit than District League teams due to the rules in place today and we have tried to reflect this in the bundles attached to each team.

We hope to place the order in the next 2 weeks for delivery around the beginning of March. Payment will not be required until delivery takes place from Gilmour Sports.

If you have any other questions, please pass them to your team rep/captain, or alternatively drop a mail to: secretary@kelburne.com for more information.

Kelburne Men's 5s Beat Giffnock 2s 2-1

On 24.11.18 - Kelburne went on the offensive straight from their pass back, setting the tone for the first half, with intricate passing and movement. Great work by Hamish Walker and Sam Hunt, passing round their opponents which led to the first Kelburne short corner of the first half on 4 minutes. That short corner came to nought but on 14 minutes came the first Kelburne goal. A rampaging Dick Donaldson manoeuvred the ball to Sam Hunt who slammed it home from a reverse stick, just inside the D. This was a deserved Kelburne lead. The team continued to play great passing hockey with notable contributions from youngsters Andrew Stewart, Tommy Austin, Jared Bolland, Nicholas Knox, and Rory Donaldson . The old guard also contributed with Hamish Walker, Dick Donaldson and Willie Hunt to the fore. On 28 minutes from another Kelburne short corner Sam Hunt turned provider, setting up Dick Donaldson to score Kelburne's second. For the rest of the first half this team, a blend of young and old, dominated and should have scored more. Giffnock almost got one back just before half time, but Fionn Wilson made a great save just as the half time whistle sounded.

The crowd thoroughly enjoyed the hockey on show in the first half, and were looking forward to more Kelburne goals in the second. Things didn't quite go as planned however and Giffnock began to have more possession, applying concerted pressure on the Kelburne team. 10 minutes into the second half the Giffnock players got a goal back, a neat finish, just evading Fionn in goal. The rest of the second half was a scrappy affair with Kelburne managing to get several short corners but ultimately Kelburne were reliant on a magnificent rearguard action from Andrew Stewart, Gordon Robbie, Tommy Austin and most notably Willie Hunt who made numerous blocking tackles and managed a diving deflection to sweep the ball off the Kelburne goal line. For the last five minutes the young Kelburne players up front pressed their opponents high up the pitch, keeping the ball away from their own half. Dylan Bradley was tenacious in his tackling, with Sam Hunt closing down without fear, and taking a painful one to his knee for his troubles.

All the Kelburne supporters and players were relieved to hear the final whistle. What started as a dominant performance became a battle in the second half, but on balance the scoreline was probably a fair reflection of the game.

Kelburne Men's 4s Beat Irvine Men's 1s 5-2

On 17.11.18 - Kelburne travelled to a cold Saltcoats to take on Irvine and they were looking to keep their undefeated season going. So far, the 4's have won 5 and drawn one but looked to be in danger of recording their first loss as the gents were soon one goal down with Irvine benefitting from some loose passing to capitalise. Kelburne soon found themselves two down with another loose piece of passing resulting with a half the pitch run before a pass across goal was deflected in. Kelburne had had more of the early possession and had missed several short corners before they finally pulled one back just before half time, through a well-worked short corner and Willie Allan being in hand to turn the ball home. 2-1 to Irvine at Half time. This was the fourth time this season (cup game included) that the 4s have been 2-1 down at half time meaning that the game certainly wasn't over. The second half started with Kelburne on top and as pressure started to mount Irvine's play become more and more erratic with chances starting to come for Kelburne. The 4s were soon on level terms and were quickly ahead with goals from Aaron O'Hear, Callum Stewart and Colin Fairbairn from some great open play off the training pitch on a Thursday night. Kelburne goalie, Fionn Wilson, had a quiet second half but made a couple of good saves when called upon before Kelburne sealed the win with another good passing move for Aaron O'Hear to grab his second and to secure 3 more points for the gents. The final score was 5-2 meaning the unbeaten run continues. Next up is first vs second in West 2 with the 4s travelling to Hillhead 4s hoping to take another step closer to promotion.

Kelburne Men's 5s Beat GHK 2s 4-1

17.11.18 - On a clear bright sunny day under a cloudless blue sky the men’s 5th team walked on to pitch 1 at Glasgow Green looking to pick up another 3 points to add to their excellent tally of points gained so far this season, having moved up a division from last year.
The 5th team had a slightly different make up today with Jared Boland and Charlie Feeney moving up to the 4s to try to help them continue their unbeaten run of results they are having this season. In addition several regular 5s players were unavailable for today’s match.
The 5s have a terrific blend of youth from Tom Hunt 10 and Andrew McGrane 11 up to the ever young Peter Robertson and Alan Bryce who were all playing today. There can’t be many teams in any sport that play with such an age range!
GHK2s have struggled to put out a team in recent weeks having conceded several of their matches to the opposition.
They may have regretted not also conceding today’s game as it was painful for them in more ways than one.
The game started with kelburne pinning GHK back into their own half and GHk finding it difficult to string together any passing moves due to the high press from the kelburne forwards and midfield.
Dick Donaldson was typically dominant in midfield, winning tackles and building up play from all areas of the park. Hamish Walker, picked to play in a central midfield role today, after having an excellent game at left back last week, put in another great performance turning the GHk players inside out and linking up with short clever passes to the Kelburne forwards.
Sam Hunt having recovered from a sickness bug just 24 hours earlier continued his good run of form by keeping possession well and using his bag of tricks to get the ball into the oppositions D.
GHK were unable to cope with the style and quality of hockey that kelburne we’re playing , lots of one twos and linking up play that allowed kelburne to get the ball moving quickly all over the pitch with the opposition chasing shadows under the midday sun.
This sustained period of good play led to several short corners for kelburne which finally created an opportunity for the young and ever sharp young Andrew McGrane to grab the first goal with a quick strike of the ball as it fell handily at his feet. Andrew’s has got off to a great start in his first season playing for the 5s and plays with great confidence and hunger.
Not long after a second goal followed from Hamish Walker with some great stick skills allowing him to weave his way into the D and take an accurate shot at goal which beat the GHk keeper.
Another goal almost followed immediately after with a superb pass from wide on the left from Alan Bryce across the face of goal which was picked up well by Tom Hunt who managed to lose his marker but couldn’t quite get his shot away before being closed down by a second defender.
A third goal was scored in the first half for Kelburne with Hamish Walker again coming to the fore and having a superb game.
The discipline of the GHK side gradually got worse as the game wore on and at the start of the second half it deteriorated further as more pressure was applied from kelburne.
A 4th goal was scored early at the start of the second half, with Andrew McGrane grabbing his second goal of the match.
A great move from a free hit on the right side of the GHK 25 involving Dick and Rory Donaldson led to kelburnes 5th goal with a great strike from Rory Donaldson finishing the move off.
Unfortunately after a long chat between both umpires the goal was chalked off and a free hit to GHK awarded.
At this point it looked as though kelburne might run riot and the GHk team were struggling to gain any foothold in the game.
Out of the blue and following a lack of concentration in the Kelburne defence GHk managed to grab a goal back from almost their only opportunity in the game so far.
Not long after this a GHk defender slipped while trying to tackle a very slippery Rory on the right wing. It was apparent to all that he had suffered a very serious injury possibly a fracture or broken ankle. The game was stopped and an ambulance was called to take the injured player to hospital.
The game ended at this point with Kelburne leading 4-1.
Good performances today from Jack Nelson and Andrew Stewart sharing the right back position and both playing with calmness and maturity . Nicholas Knox and Calum Jamieson sharing the left mid position and both linking up well the kelburne forwards. Young Rory Donaldson on the right of midfield who looks like he has been playing that position for years and who had another good game.
The youngest player on the pitch Tom Hunt who never stopped running or chasing defenders down.
Andrew McGrane notching up another 2 goals to add to his tally this season.
All young kids who were playing without fear and with lots of confidence against a team full of adult players.
They continue to surprise the other teams in the league each week with their skill levels, teamwork and work ethic.
The blend of youth and experience of the kelburne 5s continues to march on against Giffnock 2s next week at 12.0 o’clock at Glasgow Green.
