First Half
The game started off in a cagey affair with both teams playing a tight game. Kelburne were happy to sit tight and let Menzieshill bring the game to them. In terms of chances it was fairly even. First big opening resulted in veteran Ross MacPherson hitting the bar with a well timed shot after Kelburne worked the ball well down the right hand side.
Menzieshill’s first clear chance of the first half was calmly cleared from in front of Ben Rennie goal by Josh Carins. As the half went on Kelburne won a number of corners but were unable to find the net despite some well worked variations.
All in all the first half was an even affair and they went into the half time break with nothing to separate them.
Half Time Score 0-0
The second half started in similar fashion with each team probing for a weakness in each others defence. Kelburne had a number of other corners but with no success. Then the deadlock was broken after a surging run from Menzieshill’s Gavin Byres and then ensuing confusion in the Kelburne circle resulted in a penalty for Menzieshill. The resulting penalty was slotted into the right hand side of the goal passed Australian Ben Rennie.
The goal resulted in the game opening up with Kelburne having to react and push for the equaliser. Eventually this pressure paid off when hard work from Ross MacPherson when he found Iain Scholefield in the Dundee’s team circle, a first time pass was then swiftly despatched by top goal scorer Lee Morton, a superb finish by the inform striker.
This goal seemed to lift the Paisley sides spirits and they continued to push for the winning goal. Menzieshill had their fair share of possession for the remaining 5 mins of the game. This however did not result in any other goals sending the game into running penalties.
With the 5 players and two opposing Australian born goalkeepers lined up and ready for the penalties tensions was high. Up stepped Menzieshill first who’s player was able to round Ben Rennie and lift the ball into the goal. First up for Kelburne’s joint player coach Chris Nelson who forced a superb safe from the Australian internationalist Leon Hayward.
Goal were hard to come by during the ensuing penalties with each player stepping up and failing to find the net. Ben Peterson and Craig Morton the unlucky Kelburne players. Lee Morton got the team back on level terms once again with a smooth spin, slotting the ball into the goal. With Menzieshill failing to find the net with their final running penalty it was left to down to fellow player coach Iain Scholefield to set up with the final penalty.
Scholefield managed to turn the Menzieshill keeper well but was taken down as he was shooting. Despite this he put the ball in the goal but the umpire was too quick on his whistle and awarded Kelburne a penalty stroke. Set piece specialist Josh Cairns was entrusted with the penalty and swiftly despatched in high into the roof of the net and sending Bromac Kelburne into the Final of the Scottish Cup.
