Men Start Euros with a Comeback Win

Bromac Kelburne's first game as hosts of the Eurohockey Club Champions Trophy in Glasgow started with a 2-1 win over HC Minsk, much to the delight of a large crowd at the sun-dappled National Hockey Centre.

A tense and fairly even first half ended 1-0 to the Belarussians whose muscular, high-pressing style stopped the Paisley team from playing some of their best hockey. Their only penalty corner of the half resulted in a clever execution to put the recently-arrived eastern Europeans ahead.

In the second hand half the complexion of the game changed completely with Minsk abandoning their high press and Kelburne upping the tempo of their passing even higher. This started to create more space for the Paisley team to impose their attacking skills on the game with Scholefield, Nelson and Lee Morton coming increasingly to the fore. But it was to be club legend Ross Macpherson who, after just 5 minutes, grabbed the equaliser from close range - incredibly 21 years on from being a scorer the last time Kelburne hosted a European tournament. With the momentum very much with The 'Burne more chances came: two penalty corners from Cairns were a whisker away before midfield general Iain Scholefield broke the deadlock and put his team 2-1 up. After a quick break a delightful through-ball found 'Scholesy' breaking beyond the opposition defence to round the keeper and finish high into the net.

After this breakthrough Kelburne maintained a controlled passing play for the remainder of the game and secured a vital first win.

Today's game is a 4.45pm start against the Swiss team HC Rotweiss Wettingen who drew 2-2 with Banbridge on day 1.

Victory Leaves Q-Bikes Kelburne 2nd Xi In Strong Position to Win League

Q-Bikes Kelburne 2nd Xi vs Inverleith 2nd Xi

With the previous weekends win of 8-0 versus the "Unaaay" the stalwarts of the 2nd Xi had high hopes of continuing their thunderous end to an extremely difficult campaign in the regional league.    Within the opening minutes of the game it was clear that the Burne' were on the upper hand with being able to maintain the majority of the ball possession, even though after a rocky start where an aerial ball fell to the speedy Inverleith forward who tried to round the 2nd Xi veteran Fergus Barrows who made an awe inspiring save to his left keeping the defensive record strong. This became obvious when Mark Connor received the ball at left back and fired the ball up to the halfway where a lurking Ben Peterson touched the ball over the Inverleith defender which allowed him to dribble to the circle and slotted the ball under the goalkeeper.  With the knowledge that the league could come down to goal difference the ever so eager Kelburne players were keen to score more goals, This inspired Andrew Duff who received a long ball from Mark Ralph who passed the ball to Andrew Bremner who cleverly disguised a pass back to Duff for an open goal.  Soon after obtaining possession again, Michael Nicol who was playing in Midfield slapped the ball to the top of the circle where the predator that is Ben Peterson smashed a reverse stick shot past the goalkeepers face into the back of the net.  After maintaining the majority of the possession and keeping composed with William Adams making some adventurous leads up the lines and linking well with the forward line he was able to pass the ball onto Duff who walked into the circle, and the opposition gave him too much time to shoot from the top which made the score 4-0.  Keeping up with rest of the players in the team inspired both of the young players Niall Taylor and Finn Halliday who connected with each other for Niall to take an ambitious shot against an on rushing goalkeeper, who made the save, this fortunately fell to Duff who shot instantly putting the ball in the net.  At this rate it was clear cut that Kelburne were not going to slow down and this momentum kept going with a solo effort run from Ben Peterson who received an aerial ball from Kelburne legend and ex coach Mark Ralph, which led to Ben strolling into the circle and shooting the ball past a helpless goalkeeper.  This game was a test of fitness and numbers as Inverleith had realized that their plan on not taking more players for the bench was a terrible idea as the squad Kelburne had brought were simply superior with the ball pace around the back from Fraser Scott and Craig Walker tearing apart the inverleith front line and with their experience keeping the composure and allowed us to play the ball to Matt McGinley who on the run linked with Ewan Carmichael who calmly lifted the ball past several defenders in a jaw dropping display of skill which some could say was comparable to Ronaldinho in his prime, and thunderously struck the ball with force at the keeper who brilliantly saved the ball but left the rebound to Ben who reversed the ball back post to a fully outstretched Andrew Bremner who dived and tapped the ball in to make the score 7-0. Half time

Q-Bikes Kelburne 7 Inverleith 0 After receiving an inspiration team talk from captain JG Shepherd at half time the team were motivated to score some more goals, and keep the clean sheet. With the youngsters in the team inspired they led the way with some incredible play breaking down the Inverleith defence and managed to get a short corner which allowed Ben to step up and throttle a drag flack through the goalkeepers legs.  At this stage in the game Inverleith began to just break down play, and had started to through Aerial balls at every opportunity to try and control the damage that kelburne were dealing upon them slowing down the goalscoring for the game. Due to this the speedy forwards of Inverleith had managed to pick up some miss-trapped balls which allowed them to get a few short corners against the Kelburne defence but these were easily saved from the experienced kelburne short corner defence team with honorable mention to Walker who somehow managed to charge out the ball and then smashed the ball up to the front line who in some clever play had ended up with Ben at back post pushing the ball in to make the score 9-0.  Through out the rest of the game there were more opportunities to both sides, but most were muffled from both keepers on the park making some great saves.  Within the dying moments of the game promising youngster Niall Taylor had found a foot within the D which led to the end whistle playing and the entire team coming up hoping for a 10th goal. After the first shot found a foot from the first runner a second corner was given. This next corner was up to drag flick specialist Michael Nicol who flicked the ball ferociously at the goal for it to come of the post and rebound straight back at him for Michael to first time volley the ball into the top corner where he brought the scoreline to 10-0 Final Score Q-Bikes Kelburne 10 Inverleith 0 For Q-Bikes Kelburne to win the league it will now come down to Grange 2nd Xi dropping points or a win on goal difference.

As a team we'd also like to thank the umpires over the season who without the games could not have happened, and also we'd like to thank the various spectators who have come to watch us play, we greatly appreciate the support from those who have. And special thanks to the various players who this season stepped in more often then not at last minute, without whom we could not have done this well.

Kelburne 2s go back to top of league with 1 game left

Kelburne had a lot to do to improve their chances of winning the league at their 'home' pitch against Edinburgh Uni 2's.

Kelburne started strong from their push back and within 3 mins created their first chance. Neil McIntyre turned strong to beat his man and pass to JG Shepherd at back post who deflected it wide. Kelburne did not lose hope and only a minute later created another opportunity. Michael Nicol managed to steal the ball high up the pitch and using his awesome skills to beat a few players then reverse it low into the corner. 1-0. Kelburne continued to push high up the pitch and they were rewarded for their efforts. This time JG unfortunate to not finish again with a great deflection but luckily Andrew Bremner was in hand to slot it in past a hopeless Edinburgh keeper.2-0. Kelburne lost a bit of pace and didn't manage to convert any more chances in the first half.

Halftime 2-0 Kelburne

The second half started as the first ended with Kelburne having little composure in the last quarter. It wasn't till great vision from Neil McIntyre who found Miles Goldie in space who played a quick 1-2 with Mark Ralph which ended up with Kelburne winning a short corner. The initial shot from Mark Ralph was blocked but Michael Nicol was on hand to hammer is second of the game into net. 3-0. This gave Kelburne a bit of momentum and started to move the ball about with ease. Only 5 minutes later winning another corner for Mark Ralph to hammer a straight strike past into the corner. 4-0. Kelburne managed to keep the pace high and shortly after managed to win another short corner. This one was blocked but with some great linking between Craig Walker and Michael Nicol created space for Miles Goldie to slip it in back post. 5-0. Kelburne knew they needed as many goals as possible to beat grange on goal difference so managed to dig deep and push on for more. The 6th goal came from another short corner where a flick from Michael Nicol found Andrew Bremner who deflected it over the keeper into the goal.6-0. With another short corner won by Kelburne gave the opportunity for a 7th. This time Michael Nicol needed no assistance finding the net. 7-0 the last goal came with only a few minutes to spare where a shot from Michael Nicol was blocked but JG shepherd managed to slot in on his reverse. 8-0 final score.

This has put Kelburne in a strong position to push on to win the league with their last game against Inverleith at Glasgow Green.

Prolife Kelburne 5s lose to experienced Western 4s

Western Wildcats 4s v Prolife Kelburne 5s

Saturday 23rd April

Kelburne 5's travelled to Auchenhowie to take on an experienced Western 4's side in a positive mood after a much improved performance in their last outing against Rottenrow. The, mainly, young side started the game well with a few good passages of play but as the half wore on the experience of the Western side showed and they took a 2 nil lead with two quick goals from a short corner and a close range finish through keeper Matthew Retsons legs. Kelburne looked to be improving as the half wore on.

HT Prolife Kelburne 5s 0 - 2 Western Wildcats 4s

The second half started brightly for Kelburne with several opportunities but none leading to clear cut chances. The Kelburne defence was holding strong at the other end with Alan Bryce, Willy Hunt and Ryan Wood all making vital tackles and stops with Matthew Retson making a couple of fine saves to deny the Wildcats. The experienced Western forwards eventually found a way past the Kelburne defence when a ball was fired into the area and was deflected high past Matthew. At the other end chances kept on coming for the Kelburne side with strikers Aaron Primrose and John Miller unlucky not to convert a couple of well saved shots. With the game drawing to an end a strike from Western into the D was touched past Retson in goals to give the Wildcats a 4 nil lead and to secure 3 points.

A good performance from the young Kelburne side against a strong Wildcats side especially considering the Wildcats 11-0 the week before. A couple of big games left for the 5s but based upon this performance, the 5's have every opportunity to avoid relegation.

The Kelburne Prolife Fitness 3s march on to 2nd place in their penultimate league match against Uddingston 3s

Kelburne Prolife Fitness 3s 8 – 1 Uddingston 3s The 3s took to the field today against an experienced Uddingston team and turned in a great performance, running away with a superb 8-1 victory on the day. This takes the 3s Development squad in to 2nd place with just 1 game to go against Rottenrow - victory in this game could cement a well deserved 2nd place in the league.

The game started brightly for Kelburne and after 10 mins, the yellows went 1-0 up from a dribble along the baseline by Billy Anderson who cut the ball back to Niall Taylor who slotted it home underneath the goalies body. It wasn’t long before Uddingston responded and despite a valiant effort by David Bone to save a firm Uddingston shot, the ball hit his stick and foot and a penalty stroke was awarded to the opposition. This was then expertly saved by the evergreen Kelburne goalkeeper Douglas McEwan, deflecting a solid flick off his stick on to the post. 2-0 for Kelburne followed quickly however after with a goal from the 2nd penalty corner of the day. A neat slip back to Anderson from Davy Fowler resulted in the ball being driven low and hard in to the net. Just before half-time came the 3rd goal. After being bundled off the ball whilst shooting, Anderson roofed the resulting penalty in to the net for a 3-0 half-time lead.

The second half started the same as the 1st with Kelburne fully in control but too often turning the ball-over in their search for more goals. However the 4th goal came from a slick move involving the 3 young 14 yr old juniors of the team. A long pass from defence was sublimely glanced in to the centre by Rory Anderson for Niall Taylor to take the ball and drive at the defence, releasing an accurate straight pass to Johnny Hughes making the decoy run, peeling out and then releasing the ball back to Niall to push the ball in to net for a fabulous 3-way goal from the 3 young starlets. The 5th goal saw Niall Taylor get his first ever Senior hat-trick, a well worked goal down the right-side saw him well positioned inside the posts to take an unselfish pass from Johnny Hughes and guide the ball home for a well deserved hat-trick. The 6th goal saw the 2nd hat-trick of the game, this time from Billy Anderson, taking delivery of a great through ball from Alan Ralph and slotting the ball home past the helpless goalie. Incredible to think there’s 40 years between the two hat-trick heros of the day but that’s the Kelburne youth policy working at it’s maximum…! Goal 7 came from a well worked penalty corner where Fowler rifled a vicious drag-flick past the Uddy goalie in to the corner of the net to go 7-0 up.

Then against the run of play, a couple of defensive errors let an Uddingston forward in to the D to pass to another young forward who rattled a goal into the net off the bar for a great consolidation goal. There was no letting up by Kelburne however and with 5 minutes left, Dick Donaldson released a lovely weighted pass for Billy Anderson to steal through the defence and slip a ball to the unmarked Rory Anderson at the back post who guided it home for his first of the day and teams 8th Goal.

Final result 8-1 and a very good overall performance from the Kelburne team. Solid in defence, creative in midfield and growing in stature up-front. Many good things to look forward to for next season.

Q-Bike Kelburne 2s beat Grange to give them chance to win league

Q-Bike Kelburne 2nd XI vs. Grange 2nd XI

Kelburne set off to Titwood on Saturday to play against their main rivals for this years league title Grange. Knowing that they needed three points from the game, to stand them in good stead to hopefully lift the trophy yet again, Kelburne knew that they needed a strong start. Unfortunately, the game began and Kelburne were sloppy and were finding it difficult to build the play out from the back. This resulted in Grange pressing the Kelburne defence high up the pitch and placing enormous amounts of pressure on them. Eventually, Grange took advantage of the sloppy play and won themselves a short corner which they were able to convert through the use of a drag flick. After the Grange goal, Kelburne reacted and there play began to improve, winning the ball high up the pitch Andrew Duff was able to find a foot in the oppositions D and win a short corner. The ball was pushed out and Mark Ralph flicked the ball towards the goal, the Grange keeper made a good save but however, could not keep out Andrew Bremner's rebound, placing the teams back on level pegging. After Kelburne's goal the play was open with both teams creating chances, Grange won another short corner after a soft challenge from Craig Walker was deemed illegal, which they managed to score through the use of a drag flick yet again. The play remained open and both teams were passing the ball well, it wasn't until 10 minutes before half time that Andrew Duff was able to win the ball on the half way line drive forward, up the field, play a pass to Andrew Bremner, who then returned it to Duff, who then played the ball to Mark Ralph on the back post who was able to slot the ball past the keeper at his near post. Despite Kelburne equalising Grange managed to score two before half time which was caused by weak defending and  careless passing all over the park.

Halftime Kelburne 2 vs 4 Grange

After the team talk at half time, Kelburne knew that this was their last chance at this years league title and that there had to be a positive reaction along with some goals. Kelburne began the half well, linking passes together and communicating better than they did in the first half. This resulted in numerous short corners and fortunately for the Kelburne side Mark Ralph was able to convert two one going in the bottom corner and the other being placed in the top left corner of the Grange goal. A draw would not be good enough for the Kelburne side to win the title, so they continued to press Grange as hard as they could. With 3 minutes to go, with great outlet passing from the Kelburne defence, Andrew Bremner found himself on the opposition 25 metre line. He played a one, two with Michael Nicol and then played the ball slightly off the floor to the penalty spot, which is where Andrew Duff struck the ball first time into the opposition goal, to make it 5-4 in favour of Kelburne. The side in yellow were able to see out the last few minutes of the game and win the match. This leaves Kelburne and Grange equal on points meaning the league will possibly go down to goal difference as long as neither team slips up along the way.

Full time result: Kelburne 5 vs 4 Grange.

Kelburne Complete Domestic Treble

Kelburne Men’s 1st XI completed the treble by defeating Menzieshill in the Playoff Grand Final to win the National Champions Trophy on Sunday. Following their recent 12th consecutive National League title and Scottish Cup wins, the club have now completed a clean sweep of all domestic silverware this season leaving the management committee at the Whitehaugh club scrambling for additional storage space in the burgeoning trophy cabinet.

The two leading sides in Scottish hockey this year had served up a series of tight encounters in recent months and this mouth-watering season finale attracted a large, expectant crowd at the Glasgow Green National Hockey Centre. The opening exchanges were evenly contested with both sides competing for dominance in the key midfield battle ground.

The deadlock was finally broken after 25 minutes with Ben Peterson juggling the ball in the circle and finishing with a deft lift over the advancing ‘keeper. Lifted by the goal, Kelburne took control of proceedings and set about implementing the game plan set out by coaches Chris Nelson, Iain Schofield and injured skipper Johnny Christie beforehand.

With Michael Christie pulling the strings in the middle of the pitch, the increasing Kelburne pressure paid off through a skilful run by the impressive Lee Morton who jinked into the circle past three defenders before dispatching a low shot that Jack Mackenzie was alert to and saw home. Who got the final touch was uncertain and will no doubt be referred to the dubious goals panel but what was certain was the display on the scoreboard going into half time. Kelburne 2 Menzieshill 0.

The second half began as a rather scrappy affair as the Dundee side tried to claw their way back into the match. Both sets of supporters attempted to rouse their team, creating a powder keg atmosphere at times. The umpires attempted to control proceedings with a flurry of cards which changed the dynamic of the game for a period as both sides displayed more turnovers than a French bakery.

Five minutes after the restart, Menzieshill finally got on the scoresheet with strong run from midfield ending with a low pass that was deflected home in a crowded circle. Galvanised by the strike, the Dundonians stepped forward and continued to threatened the Kelburne goal, gaining a series of penalty corners but none of these was able to find their way past a strong ‘burne rearguard superbly marshalled by goalkeeper Ben Rennie.

Kelburne continued to push for the killer third goal and came close following a slick defensive penalty corner breakaway involving Gary Maitles, Chris Traynor and the evergreen Ross McPherson. They were unable to dispatch ‘the ‘hill’ though and were made to pay with 9 minutes remaining when a clever through ball found Paul Martin in the shooting area and he clinically finished to give his team the equaliser.

Just as the game looked destined for extra time, some Lee Morton trickery won Kelburne a penalty corner opportunity with only 4 minutes left on the clock. With all eyes on the Paisley side’s set piece routine, flicker Josh Cairns appeared the coolest man in the stadium as he stepped up and sent a thunderous shot high into the top corner past the despairing Menzieshill ‘keeper.

The league champions used all of their experience to maintain possession and see out the final minutes to secure a special victory that sent their fabulous support into raptures as the final whistle came. The team can now move onto the European Trophy in May with the confidence of having reasserted their position as Scotland's number one team in next season's European competition. The treble is also a fitting way to mark a season in which the club sadly lost one of its greatest figures in Gerry Ralph. This victory is dedicated to him.

Q-Bikes Kelburne 2s still in title race

Stepps 2s 2 – 9 Q-Bikes Kelburne 2s

Newly crowned Reserve cup holders Q-Bikes Kelburne faced Stepps 2’s at Glasgow Green, in a rearranged game, knowing that they must win every game, and overturn a goal difference deficit to defend their league title.

Kelburne started brightly, and good work by the forwards forced a penalty corner. Mark Ralph’s drag flick was spectacularly saved, Andrew Bremner following in had his shot blocked, but John-Gerard Shepherd was able to slam home the rebound. 1-0.

Further short corners were won, from one Finn Halliday lost his footing as he attempted to shoot, the alert Ralph played in Shepherd, and his strike was illegally stopped on the line. JG stepped up to take the penalty flick, giving the goal keeper “the eyes”, before placing it inch perfectly. 2-0 Promising youngster Niall Taylor thought he had scored his first goal for the 2’s shortly after, his deflection from Bremner’s through ball looping up and over the ‘keeper, unfortunately landing just the wrong side of the bar.

Slack play allowed Stepps to break up field, but Douglas McEwan was out quickly to smother the initial shot, and Craig Walker was able to prevent the goal, with a brilliant clearing tackle.

Midway through the half, Fraser Scott won the ball in defence before exchanging passes with Martin Byrne and advancing down the left into Stepps 25, he fed Bremner, his shot was blocked on the line by a defender, and Neil McIntyre lashed the rebound home. 3-0 Two minutes later it was 4-0. JG intercepted a loose pass and smashed a reverse stick shot past the exposed gk to complete his hat-trick.

Stepps emerged fired up and motivated for the second half, determined to fight a way back into the match. This resistance was eventually broken in the 46th minute, Byrne found Matt McGinley in space, the gallivanting midfielder eliminating players, before playing in Bremner, he again rounded the keeper, and crossed for Don Tervitt to tap home. 5-0. A robust tackle on Bremner in the D resulted in a short corner, which was despatched by Ralph with a trademark dragflick. 6-0.

Carelessness crept in, and Stepps were allowed to create some attacks of their own. A well worked short corner was deflected in at the back post. 6-1.

On the hour mark, Scot won the ball before passing to McIntyre in midfield, he played a 1-2 with Ross Wallace and worked his way to the by-line, his cut back was tapped home by McGinley. 7-1. Stepps were creaking under the pressure, and JG was again able to intercept, and shoot at goal, this time his shot was blocked, Ralph fired home the rebound. 8-1.

A couple of missed tackles allowed Stepps to counter attack, and pass the ball round the helpless McEwan. 8-2. Bremner was not to be denied the goal that his work deserved, quick thinking from Taylor created space for a snapshot, which was tapped home at the back post. 9-2.

Bromac Kelburne 1s progress to National Champions Trophy Final

Bromac Kelburne Vs Western Wildcats

After a scrappy 4-1 victory at Auchenhowie, Kelburne were hoping to put in a better team performance and Western had left themselves a lot of work if they wanted any chance of reaching the final.

The game started with Kelburne dictating play and giving western very little time on the ball. With lots of balls being nailed into the western circle it was just a matter of time before Kelburne got a goal. The continued pressure appeared too much for western and after 10 minutes Kelburne had won a short corner. With Josh spinning into the circle, leaving a lovely set up for Ben Peterson to flick it off the keepers pads into the goal. 1-0 (5-1 agg.).

The goal had made Kelburne settle which gave Western a chance to get themselves back into the game. The Kelburne side appeared to have lost their intensity and were struggling to link well as a team. Western managed to win several short corners but never managed to get the ball by the Australian keeper, Ben Rennie.

The half ended 1-0 (5-1 agg.) and both teams weren't happy with their performances. After a few words from injured captain Jonathan Christie, Kelburne started the half similar to the first. Great passing play from Micheal Christie and Christopher Nelson in midfield to give the ball to the forward Jack McKenzie and Ben Peterson who passed it between them to put it in the goal. 2-0 (6-1 agg.). Western weren't for giving up and were still trying to push high up the pitch. This leading to lots of hard tackles coming in from both teams.

After a diving tackle from Josh Cairns the umpire deemed it a foul giving J.Cairns a green card. While Kelburne were down to 10 men Western tried hard to take advantage. Unfortunately it wasn't till J.Cairns returned to the game they got the opportunity. Some individual skill from westerns Rob Harwood created space for Johnny MacDonald to slip it into the goal. 2-1 (6-2 agg.)

Kelburne managed to pick up the pace which Western started to struggle with. After Fraser Calder receiving a yellow card for Western Jack McKenzie took no time on taking the opportunity to manipulate the space and score a fantastic reverse high into the western goal. Gavin Sommerville had no chance. 3-1 (7-2 agg.). The game started to become very end to end and both teams struggling to gain any control. With both teams trying to gain some structure Lee Morton managed to create some space to pass the ball to Gary Maitles who enjoyed scoring passed his old team. 4-1 (8-2 agg.).

Unfortunately, this didn't appear to settle the game and after some umpiring decisions Ben Peterson completely lost his cool and received a yellow card for a chopping tackle on Adam McKenzie. After receiving his yellow, he was lucky not to receive a red card for his petulance leaving the pitch. This put Kelburne on the back foot but Western were unable to utilise in open play but were rewarded with a penalty flick. Scott McCartney on his last game for Western stepped up and put it away. 4-2 (8-3 agg.). Shortly after that the final whistle blew.

Final score- Bromac Kelburne 4-2 Western Wildcats (8-3 on aggregate)

Pro Life Kelburne 3’s consolidate 2nd place in league

Pro Life Kelburne 3’s 4-0 Western 3’s

Kelburne 3’s in 2nd place took on Western 3’s in 3rd place in what promised to be a close encounter, at a sunny Glasgow Green on Saturday. As it turned out it ended up quite a one sided yet hard fought victory for Kelburne as a changed squad put in a solid performance to end up comfortable winners.

Kelburne started well and created a number of chances, mainly from short corners which weren't converted. The pressure did finally pay off however when Davy Fowler did covert from a well worked short corner with a low shot to the corner, to take a 1-0 lead.

After that the intensity dipped a little and whilst Western never threatened Kelburne didn't get too many clear cut chances and any chances were well saved by the away keeper, and often the final touch or decision in the D for Kelburne didn't match the good build up play.

Half time Pro Life Kelburne 1-0 Western

Captain Robin’s chat at half time was about stepping up a level and Kelburne did that at the start of the 2nd half with good work by Will Adams and Lucas Ferndale down the left and Jay Berry down the right causing the Western defence lots of problems and plenty of chances were created with Mark Connor and Dick Donaldson coming close and some further short corners not being converted.

This was almost costly as Western broke several times with some good hockey and only some fine defending by Stuart Robin and a crucial save by Matthew Retson keeping the home side ahead.

The pressure finally did pay off though with 3 goals in fairly quick succession, as Fowler converted with a head height drag flick, Miles Goldie’s ended a fine run with a good shot into the far corner and then after a great pass from Matt McGinley, Rory Anderson tapped home from almost the goal-line.

So, 4-0 the final scoreline, and a well deserved hard working victory as Kelburne stay 2nd with only one defeat since October with another top of the table clash next week away to Ayr.

Final score Pro Life Kelburne 4-0 Western

q-Bikes Kelburne 2s still in title race

Edinburgh University 3XI Vs q-Bikes Kelburne 2s

Defending champions Q-Bikes Kelburne 2s travelled through, to the capital, with a much changed and bare eleven for a 4pm push back. Several of the squad were unavailable due to Easter events, and the requirement to socialise pre-event. This added to the fact that Edinburgh Uni 2s were not playing meant that a traditional banana skin of a fixture had the potential to be even harder...

The Paisley side started brightly and Fraser Scott was able to steal the ball, before passing to Martin Byrne on the left, the ball was quickly moved to John-Gerard Shepherd who 1 vs. 1 against his defender was able to draw a foul. From the resulting short corner Ewan Carmichael's wayward strike was redirected past the Goalkeeper by Andrew Bremner at the back post. 0-1.

The half continued in much the same fashion, the students defending at 1/2 court, with 'Burne looking promising, but unable to find a second goal. A number of short corners were won, but were snuffed out by the Uni defence. Just before half time another short corner was charged down, and the students were able to break quickly and in numbers, an eagle eyed umpire spotted an infringement, and awarded the Uni a short corner. The initial strike was charged down, but the attackers were allowed too much time to recycle the ball, and eventually forced the ball over the line to equalise just before half time. 1-1.

A half time team talk emphasizing the need to play to the tactical press, the reasons and the benefits of doing so, as well as small tactical tweaks, saw the team emerge with a much stronger frame of mind. Within 5 minutes, Andrew Duff put Kelburne back in front. Marauding centre back Scott won the ball and made progress down the right hand side, passed to Ross Wallace running across the D created space for Duff to use his 3D skills to bamboozle the defender before firing past the keeper. 1-2.

The lead was extended when Carmichael won possession in midfield, found Andrew Bremner's wide lead, as Bremner threatened along the baseline, youngster Niall Taylor peeled off to the back post. This created space for the onrushing Duff to smash the inch perfect cutback first time past the 'keeper. 1-3.

At this point, with a number of players nursing injuries, Kelburne were looking to retain possession and see the game out, unfortunately a weak dribble was stolen by the Uni defenders, and quickly played upfront. Richard Morgan won his initial tackle, the loose ball was picked up by a speedy student who was able to attack Fergus Barrows, despite making two initial saves, was let down by his defence, and the ball was eventually poked home. 2-3.

A number of slack passes crept into the Kelburne side offering Uni hope of an improbable comeback, one such pass saw Barrows have to sprint 30yards to the right back position after a wayward cross field pass...

Nerves were temporarily calmed, when Duff completed his hat-trick. JG was able to retrieve his own rebound after hitting the bar with a reverse stick shot from the top of the D, exchanging passes with James McPherson, and cutting the ball back for Bremner. A last ditch tackle stripped the ball, but the rebound was fired through a group of players into the net by the explosive forward.

Overconfidence in attack resulted in the ball being lost, and Edinburgh launched yet another counterattack. A missed tackle in defence exposed Barrows. Despite making an initial save hesitant defending resulted in a stramash, with the stronger forward able to poke home. 3-4.

With less than 2 minutes remaining, the experienced trio of Scott, Shepherd, and Carmichael were happy to keep the ball and see out time. Full time 3-4 for Kelburne. A special thanks to James McPherson, Richard Morgan, and Niall Taylor who stepped up to help.

Q-Bikes Kelburne 2s continue their league defence on Wednesday night with an 8pm start against Stepps, victory in all remaining games is required to defend their title.

Heavy loss for depleted 4s team

Dumfries 1s - 10

ProLife Kelburne 4s - 0 The final score doesn't reflect the team play on the day

Turn over ball gave the Dumfries strikers easy opportunities to attack and score.

We did have several attacking plays resulting in shots on goal and a couple of penalty corners, saved by their goalkeeper.

All the youngsters stepping up from the 5's played well, against a strong experienced team of adults

Half time 5-0

More pressure from the Kelburne squad in second half again caused problems for the Dumfries defence but turn over ball and fast breakaways gave the home team several opportunities to score

Good defending especially at short corners plus some excellent saves from Muir in goal kept the second half score to 1 extra goal

However fatigue eventually kicked in and with a couple of injuries and no substitutes Dumfries pushed on and scored another 4 goals.

Great individual and team effort from all of the players on the day but Dumfries were just too strong Final score 10-0
