Kelburne Men's 5s Beat Clydesdale 4s 2-0

On 21.09.19 - It was a beautiful afternoon at sunny Titwood, and two teams, with an abundance of youth on show were ready to do battle. It was a much changed Clydesdale team that lined up to face the 5’s after the previous weeks drubbing by our 4’s and it was clear it was going to be a much more competitive game. The start of the game saw Kelburne with all the early pressure and some lovely link up play between Dick and Tommy set Calum Brown free on the right hand side, where he made space for himself to made a superb cross into the D that Calum Stewart met perfectly but his shot went into the side netting. Aaron, Dick and Tommy were causing Clydesdale all sorts of problems with driving runs into the circle and were unlucky not to get us off the mark. As Clydesdale huffed and puffed a bit at the other end Jack made a solid tackle, ushering the ball from danger and releasing an immediate attack that eventually saw Nic pick up the ball just outside the D which he drove onto his left unleashing a reverse stick shot back across the goal and into the far corner, 1-0 Kelburne!!! And great reward for an outstanding early performance. Our young defence of Jack, Andrew, Rory and Dylan were marshalled by the experience of Stuart Robbin and alongside Fionn they were as solid as a rock. In fact it was 25 minutes before Clydesdale managed a shot from wide on the left, bringing out a great stop from Fionn. Jared was linking our defence and forwards on the right with some solid midfield defending and quick passing to have us on attack quickly and this was putting Clydesdale under lots of pressure. As the ball broke to Dick he disguised a straight ball through to Aaron and he played Tommy in to slot the ball home through the goalies legs and 2-0 to Kelburne!! Calum Jamieson made superb tackle as Clydesdale tried to create an attack and then Andrew played a lovely long ball into the 25 for Aaron but it was cleared to safety. Stuart was solid at the back and played ball to Tommy who moved it on sharply to Charlie who couldn’t quite collect. Clydesdale were coming into the game a bit more and Fionn was needed for a second time with an excellent clearance, with Rory making a fantastic tackle to follow this, only to be unluckily punished for a hand on the attackers back. This seemed to spur him on though as the next run of play saw him on the line clearing a Clydesdale shot. HALF TIME 2-0 Kelburne

The 2nd half started as the first finished, with Kelburne having lots of possession. There was lots of passing and attack after attack. Charlie’s pace and tenacity was causing some of the Clydesdale player’s real problems and they didn’t seem to know how to manage him. Andrew McGrane worked really hard in creating space and opportunities for himself and did some stellar work channelling a defender and winning the ball back for Kelburne to apply pressure on Clydesdale again. Dylan and Nic linked well with quick passes and Nic created some space to release Calum Stewart in the D to create a 1 on 1 with the goalie, but unfortunately he couldn’t slot it away. As the 2nd half went on Clydesdale came into the game a bit more but our defence continued to play well and it didn’t look as though we were going to be breached. They came close but Andrew made a fantastic stop on the line that Calum Brown cleared and immediately saw us counter attack at pace. Dick and Tommy linked up with Charlie in some great space but Clydesdale cleared their lines well. Quick creative play once again saw Aaron drive into the circle winning a short corner that Calum Brown struck well bringing out an excellent save by their goalie. The sunshine went away for a wee while or so the support thought as there was a short period that was a bit dull overhead, but Paul had just popped away from the pitch for 5 mins and as soon as he and his pink trainers returned the sunshine was once again there to brighten up the huge and vocal support. This was a great team performance in all areas of the pitch and on the side lines. Well done Kelburne 5’s, 2-0 victory!!!!

Kelburne Ladies' 3s Beat GHK 3s - 3-0

On Saturday 21.9.19 - the Ladies 3s played against GHK with a home fixture at Glasgow Green. The game started off looking like it would be a tough game for the Ladies with game play being very balanced between the teams. The team had several chances in the D but were unable to capitalise on them. In the last ten minutes of the first half a beautiful cross from Charley Austin found Kerri McGinnty on the far post who hit the ball into the goal, scoring the first goal of the game and putting Kelburne ahead 1-0 at half time. The second half started with a GHK push back and they were keen to attack hard. Kelburne were keen to keep their lead and won a short corner. An injection from Kerri McGinnty to Emma Ryan at top D with in a shot on target which was blocked by a foot on the line, resulting in a penalty flick for Kelburne. Emma Ryan stepped up to take it with the team watching in anticipation. A beautiful low ball played to the right hand side of the keeper hit the backboard with a satisfying sound and putting Kelburne further ahead with a 2-0 lead. Entering the final quarter of the game, Kelburne were pushing hard for a third goal. Balls were played hard down the lines seeking high placed forwards looking to connect and consolidate Kelburne’s lead. A shot on target resulted in a rebound ball reaching Molly Mitchell just right of the penalty spot. With the goalkeeper in front of her and defenders ready to tackle, Molly lifted the ball high over the keepers head (while everyone collectively held their breath) and into the back of the net giving Kelburne the 3- 0 lead they were seeking. Overall, a wonderful game of hockey which resulted in a well deserved win for Kelburne. Well done to Kerri McGinnty (MVP team and opposition) and Charley Austin (workhorse).

Kelburne Men's 2s Lose Out to Clydesdale 2s 2-7

On 21.9.19 - New look Kelburne 2XI playing together for the first time took on a well drilled Clydesdale 2XI and this showed early on with Kelburne being under a lot of pressure. This led to the Kelburne side being 4 goals down at half time. The second half was much better from Kelburne with better hockey and passing moves being put together. Callum McCaffer managed to steal the ball high up the park with good pressing and finished calmly by the Clydesdale keeper. Criag Speirs then finished off some good play with a composed tap in. The final score was 2-7 to Clydesdale - next week sees the men's 2XI head to Peffermill to take on Edinburgh Uni 2XI.

The Kelburne Men's 6s Draw vs Clydesdale 5s 1-1

On Saturday 21.9.19 - A youthful looking Kelburne 6’s took to the field against Clydesdale firmly in their own half. In 16mins Kelburne had the first clear chance with Adam Jack driving down the right wing and cutting the ball back in to the dee, the shot drifted past the Clydesdale keepers right hand post. Kelburne continued to press and this time Ross Young dispossessed Clydesdale’s centre back, only for the keeper to clear for the home team. With the 1st half drawing to a close Kelburne kept the pressure up and a goal line clearance this time kept the scores level. Clydesdale's first venture in to the Kelburne dee was just before half time resulting in a short corner. Kelburne club veteran Willie Hunt cleared the threat on the Kelburne goal which spurred Kelburne straight up the field in what was to be the final bit of action in the 1st half, Fraser Berry latched on to a through ball and squared this in the dee to the on coming Hamish Walker who tuck this opportunity away for a well deserved 1-0 lead at the end of the 1st half. The 2nd half started just as the first had ended, with Kelburne on the front foot, Fraser Berry once again pushing down the right wing and driving the ball across the dee to Declan Mcgee who rounded the Clydesdale keeper only for the shot to hit the side net. Kelburne just would not let Clydesdale out there own half and with another short corner, Ross Young shot just past the Clydesdale goal. On 65mins Willie Hunt picked the ball up in the Kelburne D, driving over the half way line and unleashing the forwards for another assault on the Clydesdale goal. Just as the game looked to be drawing to a close Clydesdale made a rare appearance in the Kelburne D, forcing a short corner, the first attempt at goal was blocked, but the 2nd successive short corner was driven in to the goal at the left hand post, just beyond the reach of Kelburne keeper Reece Nicholl for an equaliser, much against the run of play it has to be said. Final score 1-1.

Kelburne’s next match is away against Giffnock on 5th October. On this form the youngsters in the squad can take great heart form consecutive positive performances.

Kelburne Ladies’ 1s Miss Out vs ESM 4-1

On 21.9.19, the Kelburne Ladies’ 1st team begun their league 2 campaign away to ESM. In very hot conditions the young squad begun the match without 6 members of last year’s squad and 5 moving up from the 2nd team. Youngster Morven McEwan made her competitive debut and had to start the match after car trouble saw Player/coach Rachael Ewing-Day and captain Frances Strain miss the start of the match.
Unfortunately the strong ESM side came out fighting and within 10 minutes had scored 3 to put themselves comfortably in the driving seat.
Kelburne found their rhythm in the later stages of the first half. The score at the end of the 1st half was 3-0.
The 2nd half saw a number of great passages of play for Kelburne Ladies. Cara Bruce and Connie Reid linking well in the left hand side to create lots of attacking plays. While Rebecca Feeney and Jen Morgan worked hard defensively to deny the rampant ESM time and space.
The fast paced game was end to end and subs rolled readily as the temperature took its toll. Notably Dalia Stewart picked up the ball in the middle of the pitch and her speed and tenacity proved too difficult for ESM to match. Her string and powerful surge into the circle was rewarded with a calm shot that found its was past the ESM keeper, taking the score to 3-1.
At the other end Keeper Emily Irvine was dominant between the sticks and a string of ESM corners and attacks found her busy pads. Controversially ESM did score however during this period after a obvious kicked ball from their striker was then placed past a confused Irvine. The goal however stood as the sun drenched umpire claimed not to have seen any infringement.
The game finished too early for the young 1st XI who just seemed to have got into their stride as the final whistle blew. Most Valuable players were voted as Jenna Brolly and Emily Irvine whose defensive efforts demonstrated maturity beyond their young years.
It was a disappointing result to begin the league campaign - Nevertheless spells of dominance, exceptional effort and determination and some fabulous individual performances make the young Kelburne side a team to look out for this season.

Kelburne Mens' 4s Defeat Clydesdale 4s 13-2

On 14.9.19 - It was a very windy afternoon at Linwood where the men’s 4th eleven started there second league game of the season. The game got off to a quick start with kelburne quickly getting possession from Clydesdale and breaking on the attack. It didn’t take long for the first goal to come when a great pass down the left hand side found Kevin fairbairn to run into the D where he found himself 1 on 1 with the Clydesdale keeper where he calmly slotted it into the goal for his first of the season , A great start by the 4’s. There was a lot of great play to be had but kelburne just couldn’t take there chances, where against the run of play found a Clydesdale counter attack as they slotted home a back post shot to level the score 1-1. Kelburne quickly got back into the game and before you knew it was 2-1 , the first half continued with the 4’s playing some lovely hockey and great attacking play from all the team to end the first half 6-1. 14.9.19 - On a very windy Saturday afternoon in Stewarton the young Ladies’ 3s took to the pitch with determination. Several defensive short corners none of which Garnock scored from, brilliant performance from goalkeeper Rhiannon. Several attacking short corners, 2 of which had outcomes, one from our seasoned player Jen Owen and the other from Aimee Mcgrane. A Brilliant goal from Lucy Dunlop who ran with ball on stick from the halfway line before putting it in. Well done all ladies, outstanding play.

Kelburne Men's 5s Storm to Victory Over East Kilbride 1s 3-1

On Saturday 14.9.19 - The Kelburne Mens’ 5s continued their great start to the new season by defeating East Kilbride Mens 1s 3-1 at an overcast and blustery On-X Centre, Linwood. After an excellent draw last week, the Kelburne 5s were in fine spirits and right from the start they looked to play high and dominated possession. The first attack came after 3 minutes. A run down the right by Nicholas Knox saw a dangerous ball flash across the D. Shortly after, nice work from Tommy Austin brought a short corner which resulted in a Kelburne shot going just wide after nice passing between Dick Donaldson, Tommy and Nick. After 8 minutes, East Kilbride had their first venture into the Kelburne D but the play was quickly closed down by Stuart Robin and with the next attack Kelburne took the lead. A ball into the centre was controlled by Jared Bolland who found Aaron O’Hear at the back post and Aaron made no mistake with the finish. Kelburne 1-0 East Kilbride. In 14 minutes, Kelburne won a short corner but the opportunity was blocked. Over the next 10 minutes, the East Kilbride keeper faced a succession of shots from Aaron, Callum Stewart and Tommy Austin, who was causing East Kilbride problems with his close control and dribbling. At this point, it would be fair to say that the East Kilbride keeper was the reason for score remaining 1-0. On 26 minutes, he pulled off another great save after good work from Andrew Stewart saw the ball fed to Aaron who drove into the D only to be denied by the keeper. Towards the end of the first half, the game became slightly more broken with East Kilbride pushing up in the search of an equaliser. However, most of the chances continued to fall to Kelburne with shots from Dick and Callum Brown blocked by the keeper. As the first half drew to a close, Kelburne had two short corner opportunities in quick succession, the second of which saw the ball bounce across the face of the goal and go agonisingly wide. Half Time – Kelburne 5s 1-0 East Kilbride 1s

The second half had barely begun when East Kilbride scored an equaliser. After a quick move up the wing, the ball broke to the East Kilbride attacker in the centre of the D to score. Kelburne 1-1 East Kilbride. The goal gave East Kilbride a lift and at 38 minutes, Fionn Wilson had to react quickly to kick out a dangerous ball in the D, with Stuart breaking up a further attack shortly after. However, after the disappointment of conceding the equaliser, Kelburne once more began to play as they had in the first half. On 42 minutes, a run by Jared brought a short corner and a shot on goal from Tommy saw yet another save. Sustained pressure brought a Kelburne long corner, which saw Charlie Feeney break through into the D only to be denied once more by the keeper. On 50 minutes, yet another Kelburne short corner saw a shot by Dick fly just wide. As the game entered the last 10 minutes, and with the East Kilbride keeper continuing to repel multiple attacks, it seemed that Kelburne were to be denied the victory their play deserved. However, the young Kelburne 5s team continued to show the same effort and commitment that saw them come from 4-0 down the previous week and on 61 minutes, they went ahead once more. A short corner was played out to Dick who controlled the ball and calmly shot low past the keeper into the corner. Kelburne 2-1 East Kilbride. Kelburne continued the pressure and after 64 minutes, they got a third. A great run through the middle by Aaron saw a through pass to Charlie, who calmly slotted the ball passed the out-rushing keeper. Kelburne 3-1 East Kilbride. Overall, a fantastic team performance.

FT Kelburne 5s 3-1 East Kilbride 1s. Well done all 5’s lads!

Kelburne Mens' 4s Lose Out to GHK

On 7.9.19 - The Men's 4s started their Division 2 campaign away to GHK looking to carry on from the success from last season. The game got off to a frantic start with the action being end to end. GHK scored the early goal via a short corner before Kelburne had settled down and started to pass the ball around and building the play creating several chances and winning short corners. Kelburne was soon level via a short corner with Shaun Jardine-Malone putting the ball in from close range after a short corner 'routine'. The 4s continued to create opportunities and short corners but unfortunately could not capatilise. As the half came to a close, a lapse at the back gifted GHK the lead, 2-1 at half time. The second half started at a frantic pace with the intensity rising all the time. Both teams had chances as the game became scrappy but could not gain the advantage. As Kelburne looked to level the game GHK caught the boys napping to grab a 3rd followed by finishing off the scoring with a late short corner. The final score 4-1 to GHK. A scoreline that didn't reflect the good play from the 4s but lots of positives to take to next Saturday’s game against Clydesdale 4s, 2pm push back at Linwood, On-X.

Kelburne Ladies' 3s Miss Out to Ferguslie 1s 0-1

On Saturday 7.9.19 - Kelburne started strong with the ball not leaving the Ferguslie half for the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately a quick break from Ferguslie led to a penalty corner. After an amazing effort from the defence the ball sadly hit a foot on the goal line meaning a penalty flick was given. Despite efforts from the keeper Ferguslie unfortunately scored from the penalty flick. Kelburne quickly regained possession with amazing runs up the line from Emma Downie resulting in a shot on goal by Niamh divers which was saved by the Ferguslie keeper. After half time kelburne started strong putting more pressure on the Ferguslie defence. All efforts made by Ferguslie to break were stopped by Laura Brolly. Kelburne had 5 short corners in a row but couldn’t put any in the net.

A fantastic effort ladies!

Kelburne Mens' 3s Beat Helensburgh 1s 7-1

Kelburne Mens' 5s Lose to Greenock Morton 2s

20.4.19 - On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the Kelburne 5s travelled down the coast to take on Greenock Morton 2s. Coming after a win against a strong Giffnock 2s side, the young Kelburne team were looking to continue their good run of form. Unfortunately, it was to be a proverbial game of two halves.

First Half – The opening moments were fairly even, with the first real opportunity going to Greenock after 8 minutes but the short corner was dealt with by the Kelburne defence. Following a green card for one of the Greenock players, Kelburne had a good spell of play with Nicholas Knox playing in a couple of good passes across the D which found no takers.

Play continued to back and forth until 19 minutes when Kelburne went ahead. Andrew McGrane harried a Greenock defender in the D, won the ball and played it to Tommy Austin (who celebrating his birthday that day). Tommy shielded the ball well and laid the ball off for Dick Donaldson to shoot past the Greenock keeper.

On 21 minutes, Greenock had another short corner but it was well closed down by Willie Hunt, who was sitting in front of the Kelburne defence and intercepting a lot of Greenock through passes. Later on in the half, a good ball into the D by Ian McIntyre saw Tommy win a short corner. However, the pass out from the corner bobbled on what was proving to be a difficult playing surface.

The half closed with Kelburne on top, with good runs from both Dylan Bradley and Dick, with the later forcing a save from the Greenock keeper.

HT Greenock Morton 2s 0-1 Kelburne 5s

Second Half – Greenock 2s began the half with a higher tempo and pushing higher up the pitch. This pattern was to continue throughout the second half and seemed to turn the match against the young Kelburne side.

On 40 minutes, the Greenock pressure paid off. A dribbling run across the pitch followed by a pass back into the D found an open Greenock attacker for the equalising goal. Kelburne immediately pushed forward to try and retake the lead, with a through ball by Nick finding Andrew but again the ball took a bobble on the sandy surface.

Greenock continued pressing forward. On 50 minutes, a great interception by Gordon Robbie cut out a dangerous attack but a minute later, Greenock took the lead. A long ball from midfield found its way through to a Greenock attacker free at the post to turn the ball home. Shortly after, Greenock extended their lead. A ball down the wing was passed across the D and although Rowan McClure made a fine save from the first attempt, there was nothing he could do to stop the follow up going in.

Kelburne looked to respond and on 60 minutes, a shot from Sam Hunt forced a good save by the Greenock keeper but 2 minutes later, Greenock scored a fourth. Interplay between Greenock players in the Kelburne D appeared to end with the ball lifted into the Kelburne player. However, no whistle came and the Greenock attacker continued on to score.

With the game drawing to a close, Greenock added a fifth goal in the last minute.

Despite the result, the match was yet another learning opportunity for the young 5s team who continue to grow as players with each game.

FT Greenock Morton 2s 5-1 Kelburne 5s
